With Derek Stingley getting paid by the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs fans are naturally a bit peeved that Trent McDuffie's asking price just got a lot bigger. McDuffie, who will be entering his fourth year in the NFL in 2025, was one of the team's first-round picks in 2022 and since he joined the team, K.C. hasn't missed a Super Bowl.
McDuffie has been the cornerback the Chiefs have dreamed of, notching a rock-solid 83.1 PFF grade during the 2024 season. With three years of pro ball under his belt, McDuffie is eligible to get paid this offseason but the Chiefs have opted not to do so so far, angering some Chiefs fans.
Former Chiefs offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz is telling fans to chill out when it comes to this topic. When responding to Joshua Brisco's concern for the McDuffie contract situation on X, Schwartz didn't hold back.
"And they’ll have saved over $40m by then. I don’t get why so many Chiefs fans are up in arms about this. You think the team wants to spend more money on a guy by waiting? Both sides have to agree to a deal. And if you don’t he continues playing for a relative pittance on his rookie deal. For a team that’s managed the cap, draft, and on field performance as good as anyone since Pat’s deal I’m not sure why there’s so much negativity over someone else signing. Been seeing it a bunch so not singling Joshua out here."
Mitchell Schwartz urges Chiefs fans to calm down regarding Trent McDuffie's contract situation
Schwartz makes a solid point here, as he often does. The best part of the argument here is Schwartz noting how the Chiefs front office has done well managing the cap and landing talent in the draft, fans are still complaining and being generally negative.
This is just how things work in sports. Fans are always going to be annoyed that their team isn't "doing more". McDuffie will get paid at some point. Hopefully it's by the Chiefs but fans shouldn't be freaking out about it. Let's see how this whole thing plays out.
