The latest NFL transactions have hit the wire, and Kansas City Chiefs fans will find a few things interesting. Not only did the team place a couple of players on the Physically Unable to Play list to start training camp, but a familiar face has been released a few months after signing with his new team.
Cam Jones released
Cam Jones was hoping the opportunity to stay employed at MetLife Stadium would last a bit longer than it did. As it turns out, the New York Giants decided to move on on Saturday with the news that Jones was placed on waivers.
The Giants officially released Jones after just a single offseason with the team. He'd signed a one-year deal worth $1.3 million with the Giants in March, and now he's back on the market. The former Jets and Chiefs linebacker was cut as teams settled into training camp before the '26 season.
Jones originally landed in Kansas City as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana in May 2023, earning a Super Bowl LVIII ring as a rookie after appearing in all 17 games. He returned in 2024 and garnered similar levels of playing time as a rarely used linebacker who was a core-four special teamer for Dave Toub. Coming into his third season, the Chiefs waived him when active rosters were due before the '25 campaign.
The New York Jets claimed him off waivers the next day, though his 2025 season was cut short anyway. A hip injury suffered in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos landed him a spot on injured reserve in October. He eventually returned in December to finish with 10 games played, with the same special teams-only focus as he had in K.C.
Across three seasons and 44 regular-season games (2 starts) with the Chiefs and Jets, the 6-linebacker has been credited with 41 career tackles. Jones's presence in the market could represent an emergency-level call in case the Chiefs end up with depth issues of their own, but Brett Veach is undoubtedly hoping that players like Cooper McDonald and Jeffrey Bassa are ready to step up for more time as they step into their second seasons.
Chiefs place 2 players on PUP list
In other news, the Chiefs placed two players on the Physically Unable to Play list to start training camp.
Defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott, the team's second-round pick a year ago, is slowly working his way back from a torn ACL that halted his rookie year after just six games. The Chiefs were looking at Norman-Lott to become a disruptive presence next to Chris Jones inside, but his development was cut short after going down during a win against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.
Andy Reid acknowledged this would be the case when he addressed reporters as rookies arrived at training camp in St. Joseph on Friday. "Big guys with ACLs, it takes a little bit of time to get them back and fully strengthened up and ready to go," said Reid.
While Norman-Lott is the biggest news of the day, he's not the only one hitting the PUP list. Tight end John Michael Gyllenborg is also joining him there. Reid stated that he was still working on a knee strain suffered earlier this offseason. The undrafted tight end has head-turning athleticism, but the Chiefs might not get to see him work out alongside his peers as hoped and could be considered a long-term stash if he's unable to turn a corner.
The preseason PUP list is essentially a holding spot for a player who reports to training camp already hurt and can't pass his physical. He still counts against the 90-man roster and can attend meetings and rehab on the side, but he isn't allowed to practice. The moment he's healthy, the team can activate him, and he's a full participant again. The bigger decision comes at final cuts, when a team can shift him to the reserve/PUP list. That frees up a 53-man roster spot, but it forces him to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.
