Another week of NFL action is in the rearview mirror. While the Kansas City Chiefs moved to 3-0, other former members of the team played their Week 3 games with their current teams.
A game that had a lot of eyeballs on it this weekend was the matchup between the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Rams, two teams with Super Bowl aspirations this year. Chiefs fans were undoubtedly rooting for the Rams, mostly because they hate the Broncos but also because of Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson now suiting up for Los Angeles.
The Chiefs also had a few former kickers floating around the league, including one who won the game for his team. Sadly, there were a lot of injuries to former Chiefs as well. Let's recap the action.
Jaylen Watson exited SNF matchup against Broncos with injury
I mentioned how Watson now plays for the Rams, and he's looked pretty dang good early on, making Chiefs fans wonder how they ever let him leave in the first place. He had a key pass breakup early in the game but then, unfortunately, was injured.
Watson exited the game with a shoulder injury and did not return. As we saw, the Rams' defense suffered as a result. L.A. had gotten off to a 16-0 lead at halftime, but the Broncos clawed their way back and eventually won the game. Watson is reportedly not going to be available for the Rams' critical Week 4 matchup against the Eagles, which has become a must-win for Los Angeles.
Spencer Shrader won it for Colts on last-minute field goal
The Chiefs had to bring in other kickers when Harrison Butker missed time in 2024. Spencer Shrader was one of those kickers and appeared in two games for Kansas City, converting all three field goals and all six extra points that were asked of him.
Shrader ended up with the Colts the next year, but he spent the majority of the season on IR. Now he's back and looks better than ever with Indianapolis. That was on display when he drilled the game-winning field goal from 53 yards out to give the Colts their first win and drop the Texans to 0-3.
Shrader is a perfect 8-for-8 on field goals and has only missed one extra point of the seven he's attempted. It's been a solid start to the season for the former Chiefs kicker.
Leo Chenal suffered season-ending neck injury
It was a scary moment on Sunday when the former Chiefs linebacker, now with the Commanders, went down during Washington's game against the Seahawks. Chenal was carted off on a backboard, but the good news is that he's expected to make a full recovery, despite being sidelined for the rest of the year following surgery to repair the fracture.
Chenal was a third-round pick by Kansas City in 2022 and became one of their standouts on defense. He signed with the Commanders this offseason, and Chiefs fans miss his contributions to the defense.
Hollywood Brown inactive for MNF
Chiefs fans didn't care too much when Hollywood Brown departed the team in the offseason. He joined the Eagles and has not contributed for them at all so far. He didn't see the field at all in Week 1, had two carries (yes, carries) in Week 2, and then was inactive in Week 3 with an ankle injury.
Jawaan Taylor has limited penalties with Falcons
Chiefs fans might have forgotten about Jawaan Taylor because... well, he's not getting flagged all the time with his new team. For those who don't remember, Taylor was cut by the Chiefs in the offseason, and he eventually signed with the Falcons.
Through three games, Taylor has only been flagged twice, according to PFF. Jason Kandel of Blogging Dirty, FanSided's Falcons site, told me that Taylor has been "less penalty-prone than we've seen him, but still not great, admittedly".
PFF's numbers back this up, as Taylor's run-blocking grade of 43.5 is ranked as the fourth-worst out of all eligible tackles. His overall grade of 54.4 is the 10th-worst in the league among eligible tackles.
All things considered, though, Kandel said he's been worth the money. "He's not elite... But he's not an overt liability anymore."
