The NFL transaction report was rather busy on Tuesday. Not only are some teams starting to sell off parts before the league's trade deadline on November 10, but every franchise is feeling the pinch of injuries. From tryouts and visits to practice squad shuffling, there were plenty of moves to keep track of as teams begin preparation for Week 8.
The transaction wire held plenty of interest for those in Chiefs Kingdom who like to keep track of old friends. Let's take a look.
Emari Demercado is a free agent
It wasn't so long ago that Emari Demercado was an exciting free-agent pickup signed back in March to help bolster a completely rebuilt Chiefs backfield. The anchor, of course, was Kenneth Walker III, who has been sensational in his first half-season with the team, but general manager Brett Veach made quick work to further shore up the running back room with both Demercado and rookie Emmett Johnson as a fifth-round draft pick.
But instead of cementing his role as a third-down back, the Chiefs showed him the pink slip before the NFL's roster cut deadline in late August, just months after signing him to a one-year deal. The Dallas Cowboys claimed him on waivers and some fans were confused. Two months into a new season, the Cowboys officially cut Demercado after only five carries for 15 yards in two appearances with the team.
Carson Steele reaches an injury settlement with the Eagles
Two years ago, Carson Steele went from preseason sensation to a semi-featured contributor in the Chiefs' backfield over a full 17-game season. After failing to make the team in his second season, Steele eventually found his way onto the Philadelphia Eagles roster this past offseason and even earned some playing time on special teams in two games before injuring his shoulder. After he was waived, he reverted to the team's injured reserve before ultimately reaching a settlement and earning his freedom to sign elsewhere when healthy again.
Jets re-sign former Chiefs prospect
NFL teams made a ton of practice squad additions this week, and the Jets decided to find room for defensive tackle Amari McNeill on the taxi squad. McNeill first signed with the Chiefs after going undrafted this spring but was released when active roster cuts were due. While McNeill might have been a nice prospect, the truth is that the Chiefs were deeper than ever along the defensive interior this offseason, which left the former Colorado lineman out of the mix.
Jason Brownlee searches for a new home
Speaking of practice squad moves, as the New York Giants sought to make room for defensive end Dean Lowry, they had to let someone go: former Chiefs wide receiver Jason Brownlee. After earning scant playing time in six games a year ago, Brownlee proved unable to make this year's roster and the Giants added him to the taxi squad. Now he'll be looking to extend his NFL career with his fourth NFL team after coming into the league with the New York Jets.
Tryouts continue for former Chiefs
Plenty of familiar faces are still hoping to find meaningful work even though seven weeks of the season have already passed. Former Chiefs defensive tackle Cole Brevard worked out for the Miami Dolphins this week, while former interior offensive lineman C.J. Hanson was in Baltimore trying to make the Ravens roster. The biggest name on the list, however, was defensive tackle Khalen Saunders, who spent time with the Tennessee Titans for a free agent tryout. Former Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi calls the personnel shots there, so perhaps that connection will work in his favor.
