Kansas City Chiefs fans are experiencing a strange sensation this season. The team is 6-6, a 10th straight division title likely isn't happening, and they're in jeopardy of missing the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. To say that fans would welcome just about anything to help avoid that last point of happening is an understatement.
Tyrann Mathieu might have shaken things up a bit on Monday and his comments could be difficult for Brett Veach to ignore. While appearing on Up & Adams, which was live from Arrowhead Stadium on Monday, Mathieu was asked by Kay Adams if he'd consider a return to not just football but to the Chiefs.
"I'm not gonna say no. (Laughs) I won't say no," Mathieu said. Adams then joked that the two could walk down to Brett Veach's office after the interview. Mathieu revealed that he's remained in contact with Veach and Andy Reid. Adams then revisited Mathieu's previous take on returning to the league earlier in the year and asked what changed his mind. "You want to help your friends... You want your friends to have a fighting chance... Fans hit me up all the time on Twitter or X so you know they want me to come back. Mostly they want me to come back to just provide that energy."

Tyrann Mathieu expresses serious interest in return to Chiefs
Mathieu joined the Chiefs in the 2019 offseason after spending the first six years of his career with the Cardinals and Texans. It was a huge get at the time because Mathieu was one of the best safeties in the league and immediately filled the role the Chiefs needed and wanted him to fill. It resulted in a Super Bowl title in Mathieu's first year in K.C. and the Chiefs went back to the big game in his second year in Kansas City.
Unfortunately, things didn't end well between the two and the Honey Badger eventually moved back to his home state of Louisiana and joined the Saints for the final three years of his career. Clearly he's on better terms with the Chiefs now than he was in the 2022 offseason and honestly, fans probably wouldn't turn him down if he's serious about a return.
The safety room is in a heap of trouble after letting Justin Reid walk in the offseason (he also returned to his home state of Louisiana and signed with the Saints) and Bryan Cook getting banged up. Reid filled the void that Mathieu left behind when he headed to New Orleans but the Chiefs don't have that guy now that Reid is out of the building. He's not wrong in that Chiefs fans would welcome him back simply to have someone on the roster that can get the rest of the guys fired up.
Whether or not Mathieu is serious here remains to be seen but given the state of the Chiefs' safety room, bringing him back wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.
