Ex-Chiefs WR calls Aaron Rodgers the GOAT after winning with Mahomes

Marquez Valdes-Scantling knows a thing or two about playing with all-time great quarterbacks. But if you wanted to know where he stood on the pecking order of historical greatness, Valdes-Scantling is going to cast his lot with his current QB.

Kansas City Chiefs fans will recognize Valdes-Scantling from his two seasons playing for the team during the dynastic seasons in 2022-23. MVS came away from his tenure in K.C. with two championship rings and plenty of experience working with the player widely recognized as the best QB of a generation in Patrick Mahomes.

Now, however, Valdes-Scantling is shining a light on a different name as the one he would call the "best to ever play the game" of football.

"Obviously, I think he's the best quarterback to ever play this game. If he's 65 years old, he can still spin the ball. He's always playing chess with the defense," said Valdes-Scantling to reporters following the Steelers' victory over the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football.

Now, it's quite possible that Valdes-Scantling sincerely means what he said to reporters recently when asked about what Aaron Rodgers still brings to the table as a quarterback despite being 42 years old. The veteran wide receiver clearly believes that age is just a number for Rodgers. That said, he also has a selfish reason to say the things he's saying.

Given how his career has slipped into a journeyman phase, Valdes-Scantling would be wise to say and do whatever it takes to hang onto a roster spot in Pittsburgh. He's already spent time with the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers in the last two seasons. That makes it hard to believe he's going to find plenty more chances on the other side of Pittsburgh, whenever that part of his journey is over.

But let's state the obvious here: Valdes-Scantling is already well-versed in what Rodgers can do, since he came into the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, where Rodgers spent the majority of his career. MVS spent four seasons catching passes from Rodgers, a future Hall of Famer, and the history there is why Pittsburgh likely extended an opportunity in the first place.

Valdes-Scantling signed with the Steelers back in October after a tryout went well, and while his production has been limited in two games so far, he did come away with a 19-yard touchdown in Week 15. Rodgers always appreciates having familiar faces around him in new places, so the addition of MVS wasn't a major shock, even if he's had problems finding work elsewhere.

So perhaps this is no slight to Patrick Mahomes at all. While Valdes-Scantling knows what it's like to play with the Chiefs quarterback, his own history and current scenario makes his current signal caller the obvious answer to any "best ever" question.
