Whether or not the National Football League's leadership accelerator program makes a whole lot of sense to those on the outside, that hasn't stopped the annual event (since 2022) from moving forward with another two-day event to kick off the week.
Two members of the Kansas City Chiefs' organization will be among 34 total invitees in attendance as part of the league's efforts to help those considered qualified candidates for future leadership roles to meet each other, learn about taking the next step, and meet the actual owners making those decisions in years to come.
Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is one of 16 head coaching candidates who will be at the accelerator on Monday and Tuesday. Assistant general manager Mike Bradway is among 18 front office executives who were nominated as likely targets for future GM roles.
The NFL's leadership accelerator will meet on Monday and Tuesday with two Chiefs in attendance.
In a sport where "who you know" matters just as much as "what you know", it can't hurt the likes of Bradway and Bieniemy to do a bit of glad-handing around the league's upper echelon—that is, if either or both are interested in taking that next step toward becoming a general manager or head coach, respectively.
That said, a few persons on this year's list of 34 entrants is rather confusing, considering the "accelerator" insinuates that the group would lean younger and inexperienced, a group of assumedly green leaders who need to develop their networking skills in a busy sport that leaves little margin for personal development. That could include Bieniemy, who has been around the block, along with former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, who is now the offensive coordinator for the L.A. Chargers. It's also notable that former Chiefs assistant coach Mike Kafka is also on the list.
After failing to secure a head coaching job after interviewing with literally one half of all NFL franchises in his first stint with the Chiefs, it's hard to imagine Bieniemy is going to soften things enough to warrant an actual opportunity this time around. He deserved one before, however, so if helping the Chiefs rebound at such a pivotal juncture helps elevate him at this stage of his career, then good for him.
As for Bradway, he feels like the next obvious departure from a Chiefs' front office that has sustained fairly consistent poaching efforts from other teams. Mike Borgonzi is now the general manager of the Tennesse Titans. Ryan Poles holds the same job with the Chicago Bears. Former Chiefs exec Brandt Tilis is now the EVP of football operations in the Panthers in the Carolina Panthers front office
