Quarterback injuries are a major storyline throughout the NFL in the first two weeks. Week 2 was a brutal one at the position, as the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and New York Giants all saw their young quarterbacks go down with injuries.
With the Giants now not having Jaxson Dart for the rest of the season, names are naturally going to pop up as options for who they can bring in as depth at the position. Jameis Winston is the starter in New York now that Dart is unavailable, but, as we all know, the Winston experience is a very up-and-down one. The Giants need to look into other options in case things go south with Winston quickly.
Some might be wondering about Kansas City Chiefs backup quarterback Justin Fields as a potential option for the Giants. Well, that feels unlikely for a multitude of reasons.
Justin Fields trade makes little sense for Giants after Jaxson Dart injury
First off, the Chiefs traded for Fields for a reason. They clearly saw value in bringing him to Kansas City as Patrick Mahomes' backup, especially with Mahomes returning from a major injury. Why go through all of that trouble only to then sell him off?
Sure, Garrett Nussmeier showed some potential during the preseason, but he's a seventh-round rookie. If Mahomes had to miss time, do the Chiefs really want Nussmeier out there as their starting quarterback when there's still so much more for him to learn? Fields at least has some starting experience if the Chiefs do need him to take some snaps.
Second, the Giants probably wouldn't inquire about Fields in the first place. He struggled last season with the Jets, finishing his nine starts with a 2-7 record and a 62.7 completion percentage. Not great. He proved he's not someone the Giants can rely on to start more than a handful of games, which is what they'd need from him.
Chiefs have little reason to consider trading Justin Fields to Giants
Simply put, there are better options for New York to pursue rather than having to give up any sort of draft capital for Fields. Jimmy Garoppolo is still a free agent, and that could definitely be an option for them. If they were going to surrender draft picks to bring someone in, they'd want it to be for someone with a little bit better track record than what Fields has shown in recent years.
This is good news for the Chiefs because their quarterback room is in place, and there's no need to mess with it right now or at all. Mahomes is the starter, Fields is the backup, and Nussmeier is the third-stringer. Bing, bang, boom.
