Devin White talked a big game before his Las Vegas Raiders squared off against the Kansas City Chiefs. If you watched the game or saw the score, you'll know that it backfired in a big way on the Raiders linebacker, as his team got walloped 31-0. I repeat: 31 to NOTHING.
In White's defense, his team was coming off a big win the previous week against the... *checks notes*... one-win Titans, who are one of the worst teams in football. White had a big game against the hapless Titans and was feeling confident about his team's chances against the Chiefs in Arrowhead.
Earlier in the week, White spoke about his previous experience playing against Patrick Mahomes, one of those instances being in Super Bowl 55 that ultimately went in White's favor. He felt good about replicating that success but must have forgotten that the 2025 Raiders defense is nowhere close to the 2020 Buccaneers defense.
"For me alone, it's just I ain't scared. I know a lot of people look at him for what he is. The guy won three Super Bowls and whatnot, obviously, but it's just good to have experience being able to play him," White said. "I treat every game like a big game, but to go on the road and be able to go in their house when they got a good stadium and be able to do what we do. So, I know I'm going to be poised and I'll have my guys ready to play."
White did not have his guys ready to play. Mahomes gashed the Raiders defense, throwing for 286 yards and three touchdowns and was pulled before the end of the third quarter because K.C. had such a big lead.
Devin White’s pregame jab at Chiefs aged terribly after Raiders loss
White didn't just sound off about his confidence going up against Mahomes though. He also thought that he'd have an easy time facing off against tight end Travis Kelce.
"Devin White gone win. That's all. Devin White gone win when I'm against him," White said.
Devin White did not win. Kelce finished the game with 54 yards off three catches and led the team in receiving. If that's White "winning", then that's a big ol' yikes.
This is just a prime example of why these players should avoid poking the bear. We've seen time and time again opposing players making silly statements like these ahead of games against K.C. and it tends to not work out very well for them. White is the latest victim of that and it's entirely his own doing.
