The Kansas City Chiefs are set to add several new members to the roster ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, but in the hours before the event, the franchise paused to honor a deserving legend.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt announced that former Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson will be this year's inductee into the team's Hall of Fame. Johnson will be introduced at Thursday night's Season Ticket Member Draft Fest, which coincides with the first round of this year's draft, before being formally enshrined at Arrowhead during the upcoming regular season. The specific game for Johnson's ceremony has yet to be announced.
Johnson arrived in Kansas City as the 15th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. He entered the league as the reigning winner of both the Butkus Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation's top linebacker and defensive player after setting records at Texas with 65 tackles for loss in his three-year career—two of which earned him All-American status.
The Chiefs Hall of Fame is getting its 55th member this year.
For the Chiefs, Johnson was everything Carl Peterson could have hoped for as the team's general manager. Over 13 seasons in Kansas City, Johnson became the franchise's all-time leading tackler, finishing with 1,146 total tackles as a Chief. He was also a four-time Pro Bowler (2011-13, 2015), a two-time All-Pro, and a longtime team captain. He appeared in 182 games for the Chiefs (more than any other linebacker in franchise history) and helped the team reach the playoffs six times.
"I am so grateful and honored to be inducted into the Chiefs Ring of Honor," Johnson said. "I played 13 years in Arrowhead and always dreamed of one day having my name at the top of the stadium alongside of other legends. I want to thank Clark Hunt and the entire Chiefs organization for making my dreams come true. To the fans, your passion made every moment unforgettable and now my name will echo in the stadium and through the hearts of Chiefs Kingdom forever. Thank you, Lord."
Johnson's induction into the Chiefs' Hall of Fame felt like the next obvious step for a franchise that was already getting into his era of team legends. Tamba Hali was enshrined in 2024, which made Johnson a logical next target as a longtime teammate.
