Darren Mougey has been playing hardball all along, so it makes sense that he'd hold firm to that stance as the NFL's tag deadline neared on Tuesday afternoon. The league demands that every franchise either apply a franchise or transition tag to any player by 4:00 p.m. ET, and the New York Jets did just that when their general manager tagged running back Breece Hall with the franchise designation.
The news that Hall is now under team control for another year with the lowly Jets is frustrating, but it's also expected given Mougey's history. And unless the Chiefs want to negotiate with such a GM in a pivotal offseason, they've likely already moved on with the idea.
Remember that Mougey and his counterpart in the Chiefs' front office, Brett Veach, played a game of chicken before the NFL's trade deadline. Hall was on the trade block as a rare desirable asset for a moribund franchise, and the Chiefs were employing the league's least threatening backfield. It was a marriage made in heaven—until it wasn't.
A pairing of Breece Hall and the Chiefs makes sense on a number of levels, but Darren Mougey is intent on getting something out of it too.
The Jets were insisting on a day two pick in return for Hall, who was already midway through a contract year. The Chiefs were reportedly willing to come up to a fourth-round choice in return, while the Jets insisted on a third. One round of difference kept the deal from happening. Hall ended the year as a frustrated player who was vocal about wanting to get out of New York. The Chiefs shrugged and did nothing else (besides make Dameon Pierce and Elijah Mitchell sit for very long stretches of time).
Hall might be frustrated and fans might be surprised by the use of the franchise tag, but it always made sense for Mougey to do so. The transition tag would have allowed other teams to negotiate with Hall, and Mougey has wanted full control all along. The franchise tag comes with a higher premium—at $14.3 million for next season—but it also allows Mougey to maintain some leverage that he obviously desires.
For those who want to bash Mougey, let's not forget he's put together a solid trade history. His acquisition of cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. from the Tennessee Titans was a nice start to the 2025 season. He got premium picks back for Sauce Gardner in a midseason shocker, and the Quinnen Williams deal with the Cowboys was seen as an big win for the Jets as well.
If the Jets know that the Chiefs or other suitors are going to line up for Hall in free agency, then why not guarantee at least something in return for him without having to wait for a compensatory pick? The Chiefs are quite glad they tagged and traded L'Jarius Sneed to the Titans, so they clearly know the value of such a move.
The painful part is sitting opposite a stubborn GM. Hall is from Kansas City, so it would be a homecoming for the player. He wants out of New York, and the Chiefs still have the same glaring need they did six months ago (and the six years before that). The marriage makes sense, but Mougey is content to get in the way of that pairing knowing that he could get something out of it.
