Patrick Mahomes' 2025 season is done after the Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback tore his ACL in the final minutes of the eventual loss to the Chargers. The Chiefs were already facing an uphill battle the rest of the season but Mahomes' injury now begs questions of will the dynasty continue in Kansas City.
Of course, because we always have to be comparing players to other players, Mahomes' injury immediately made people think back to Tom Brady's career. How can people continue to tie these two together once more? Well, this time, people's comparison notes take them to the major injuries both players experienced.
In Brady's ninth year in the league, he'd already won three Super Bowls and was coming off a loss in the big game when he entered the 2008 season. He tore his ACL in the season opener (against the Chiefs at Arrowhead coincidentally) and missed the rest of the year.
While Mahomes' timeline isn't identical, it is eerily similar. He's won three Super Bowls, is in his ninth year after losing in a Super Bowl, and then tore his ACL during his ninth season in the pros. The big difference here is that Mahomes' injury came late in the season while Brady's was in the season opener.
History repeating: Both Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes suffered torn ACLs in their 9th NFL seasons.

People are going to point to this comparison once more and, for Chiefs fans, if you choose to buy into it, this is a reason to be optimistic. Dan Patrick, however, pointed out one big reason why this comparison isn't something to necessarily buy into.
"The difference is Tom Brady doesn't use his knees other than to stand in the pocket. Mahomes is constantly on the move. That's the biggest difference here," Patrick said on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday morning.
Dan Patrick pours cold water on Mahomes-Brady comparison
This argument does make a lot of sense. Brady and Mahomes might get compared to each other due to their dominant nature and both guys having three Super Bowls at this stage in their career but they're very different players.
Mahomes loves to scramble and make plays while on the run while Brady was nowhere near being that type of player. He stood in the pocket and fired off quick passes, which worked out for him more often than not. Both guys made the most of their playing styles and have seen the top of the NFL mountain more times than most players would dream of.
At the end of the day though, we can't point to how Brady's career went after his injury and assume that's how it'll go for Mahomes. They're not the same player and Mahomes might have to change his style of play when he returns from this injury. He might not be able to be as mobile and if that's the case, what kind of impact will he have then?
This is going to be a big question for the Chiefs moving forward. Chiefs fans are obviously hoping that Mahomes comes back stronger like Brady did for the Patriots after his injury but we'll have to wait and see how this whole thing actually plays out.
