Cyrus Allen has been the single greatest source of excitement so far in Kansas City Chiefs training camp. After just a few days, the rookie fifth-round wide receiver has become a favored target of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, exhibiting great hands and separation ability after already providing hopeful glimpses in rookie minicamp. Unfortunately, the buzz hit a wall on Saturday in St. Joseph with the news that Allen left practice with an injury.

Special teams coordinator Dave Toub addressed the media from St. Joseph after practice and explained a bit more of what happened. "Elam was catching a ball. He was a gunner. They were both playing gunner and Elam was catching it. He was clearly there and Allen came in and he thought he was catching it and they collided. I hate to see somebody get hurt, especially on a special teams drill. We’ll see how he is."
Toub reinforced the buzz generated by Allen so far in training camp as well by saying, "He’s really doing well on offense. He’s doing well for me, too. He’s at gunner. He’s at returner. He’s doing a real good job. He’s put himself in a good position to be a guy that’s going to help us this year."
When asked about the team's process about selecting special teams performers, Toub made it clear that Allen was always going to be asked to be a core performer as a day three rookie.
"Anytime you have a rookie... everybody’s on special teams until they aren’t. Until they establish themselves as a starter on offense or defense. Then we have to pull back and maybe take them off two or three phases. But initially, everybody starts off as a four-phase guy, and that’s just the way we do it. It’s worked over the years, and it’s hard not to keep a guy off just because he was drafted high and all of a sudden, to try to pull him back and make him a special teams player later. So you start off that way and then you wean them off special teams as you go."
The Chiefs drafted Allen on day three as a savvy route-runner out of Cincinnati. The hope was that he would help round out a WR room that was largely leaning on internal improvements following a frustrating offensive campaign (and overall season) in 2025. Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy sit atop the depth chart, and the Chiefs' lack of offseason moves at the position made it clear that they believe some coaching changes, including the hire of Chad O'Shea as WR coach, will make the difference.
For fans who wanted some outside help, however, Allen's arrival in camp has been heartening to watch. Every day has provided highlight catches and positive reports, with a healthy amount of targets from Mahomes with the first-team offense. Even as Worthy and Rice strive to move beyond injuries suffered from a year ago, the Chiefs need someone with greater separation ability and Allen looked the part.
Allen caught 13 touchdowns last season for the Bearcats, which was third in all of FBS, to go with his 51 catches and 674 yards.
