Cris Collinsworth could not resist another Patrick Mahomes shoutout on SNF

When you've won three Super Bowls, you get treated differently.

There's been a running joke (or maybe not so much to some people) that Sunday Night Football color analyst and former NFL wide receiver Cris Collinsworth loves to praise the heck out of Patrick Mahomes' every move. It seems to annoy a lot of NFL fans but, at this point, it does feel as though Collinsworth has embraced the joke.

Why are we bringing this up when the Chiefs haven't played on Sunday night recently? Well, because Collinsworth managed to bring Mahomes up in Sunday night's game between the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears when the two-time MVP wasn't even on the field. You can imagine how that went with non-Chiefs fans.

Collinsworth was discussing a nifty play from 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and found a way to bring up Mahomes while doing so. The play occurred in the third quarter when Purdy was scrambling around and avoiding Bears defenders left and right before tossing the football to fullback Kyle Juszczyk in the end zone for a touchdown. It was an impressive play and Collinsworth couldn't help but be reminded of a certain Chiefs quarterback after the play.

"I mean, if this were Patrick Mahomes we'd be screaming, 'Oh! Patrick Mahomes,'" Collinsworth said on the Sunday Night Football broadcast. "I know I would be screaming."

Brock Purdy highlight somehow turned into Patrick Mahomes praise on Sunday night

I can only imagine the eye rolling that occurred when Collinsworth found a way to bring his favorite quarterback up after Purdy's wizardry. That being said, is it all that crazy that he did so here? Purdy's play was reminiscent of something Mahomes often does, which is scrambling around and then making magic happen. I know I was thinking about how the play looked Mahomes-esque in the moment and clearly, I wasn't alone there.

Some might view this moment and think the two quarterbacks are held to a different standard, and guess what? They absolutely are! Mahomes has earned the right to be brought up even when he's not on the field given he's been to five Super Bowls, won three of them, and also added two MVP trophies to his shelf. He's on a different level when it comes to NFL quarterbacks so it makes perfect sense that Collinsworth would want to bring him up whenever he can.

This shoutout during Purdy's big play probably irritated 49ers fans too, especially considering Mahomes and the Chiefs have beat the Niners in two Super Bowls since the 2019 season (and Purdy was the S.F. quarterback for one of those big games). They just can't escape the Mahomes praise no matter where they go.

Chiefs fans won't have any problem with Collinsworth being complimentary of Mahomes but, as we know, he and the Chiefs are the villains of the league. Mahomes' name getting discussed when he's not in the game is only going to make the mob angrier.
