It's unknown if the Kansas City Chiefs are officially in the mix for wide receiver Cooper Kupp after his release from the Los Angeles Rams, but oddsmakers suggest the team is a longshot to land the former Super Bowl MVP.
Kupp, 30, was let go after attempts to trade him before the new league year failed to yield any dividends. The Rams sought cap relief with the move, forcing them to partways with one of the most productive weapons in franchise history.
The 2021 Offensive Player of the Year is now one of the most desirable free agents available, and he's reportedly drawing interest from several teams looking to bolster their passing attacks. Unfortunately for fans who would love to see such an addition for Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City appears to be an underdog in the race for his services.
Such an addition would be nice, but the odds aren't ever in the Chiefs favor here.
According to FanDuel's betting odds, the Chiefs sit at +790 to sign Kupp, trailing multiple teams, including the Denver Broncos (+410), Dallas Cowboys (+490), and Baltimore Ravens (+520). Even the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars (+610) are considered more likely landing spots.
According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, the Broncos, Seahawks, and Patriots were all name-dropped as key franchises to watch in the chase.
Despite battling injuries over the past two seasons, Kupp has remained one of the league’s most productive receivers when healthy. After a historic 2021 campaign in which he posted 145 receptions, 1,947 yards, and 16 touchdowns, Kupp has played in just 21 games over the last two seasons, dealing with ankle and hamstring issues. Even with those setbacks, Kupp managed 59 receptions for 737 yards and 5 touchdowns last season.
If fully healthy, Kupp would instantly elevate the Chiefs’ passing attack, giving Mahomes a sure-handed weapon who could aim the team's intermediate passing game with Travis Kelce. Rashee Rice is returning from injury and faces a likely suspension, and Xavier Worthy was lonely as a volume target last season. The Chiefs did bring back Hollywood Brown, but his own injury history makes him a wild card as well.
