The Kansas City Chiefs are injured at wide receiver, opening the door to all kinds of wide receiver trade talk. That, of course, includes Tyreek Hill, who was not having a good time with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The Dolphins got destroyed in all facets of the game by the Colts of all teams and now, naturally, people are going to link Hill to the Chiefs.
On paper, a reunion makes sense. Hill was a former fifth-round draft pick by the Chiefs in 2016 and went on to do amazing things for them on the field. When Brett Veach traded him in the 2022 offseason, a lot of people thought he was crazy for doing so but it helped the Chiefs win two more Super Bowls.
Meanwhile, Hill has done all right for himself with the Dolphins, at least early on. tallying over 1,700 receiving yards in the 2022 and 2023 season while also finding the end zone seven and 13 times respectively. Last year, while not a bad season by any means, saw Hill's numbers decline, as he finished with under 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since his injury-riddled 2019 campaign. He scored just six touchdowns last year as well.
The real concerning stat for Hill though is that, according to Ari Meirov, it's been exactly one year since Hill has recorded a reception that went for over 30 yards. Now it's easy to point to other factors here, like Tua Tagovailoa's injuries forcing the Dolphins to play over quarterbacks but Tua started for the 'Fins on Sunday and Hill still didn't get a big reception. It's hard to say 100% if this is mostly on the Dolphins or if Hill is starting to regress.
Chiefs risk disaster if they ignore this Tyreek Hill trade warning sign
Again, Chiefs fans might choose to ignore this stat and blame that solely on Tua and the Dolphins' offensive issues dating back to last year. That's fine if they choose to do so but the reality of the situation is that Hill has not been that explosive wide receiver for a full year now and he's 31 years old. To think his better days on the field are behind him wouldn't be a crazy thought.
The Chiefs do need wide receiver help but hopefully, their playmakers are going to return sooner rather than later. We know when Rashee Rice will be back but Jalen Royals and Xavier Worthy are another story. Is trading for a less explosive Tyreek Hill worth it when the Chiefs have players who can come in and help out Patrick Mahomes?
This will be a question that Brett Veach needs to ask himself in the coming weeks. Hill might be someone that Chiefs fans would love to see back in Kansas City but this stat is certainly alarming, to say the least.
