Truly special.

The 2025 season was already in the hole for the Kansas City Chiefs but things got even worse when Patrick Mahomes went down with a season-ending injury late in the year. There was chatter that the injury would potentially sideline Mahomes for a chunk of the 2026 season but, fortunately, it appears that the two-time MVP will be ready to go for Week 1 and possibly even before then.

Chiefs fans aren't surprised to hear this and neither is former NFL quarterback and current analyst Chris Simms. During the latest episode of his podcast, Chris Simms Unbuttoned, Simms talked about Mahomes' recovery and how he's not the least bit shocked to see the Chiefs quarterback on track to return in time for the regular season.

"He's a psycho of psychos," Simms said. "It's all day, it's every day. It's what he is. You knew he would be on a mission to be back with his team even in OTAs. Forget training camp. I just know how the guy operates... He wants to be great and be out there with the guys. Mahomes is everything you want, for all the right reasons."

Chiefs fans were already well-aware of Mahomes' mindset and therefore aren't stunned by any means that he should be able to return in time for OTAs. This is the same guy who suffered a high ankle sprain during the AFC Divisional round game against the Jaguars in early 2023 and returned to action later on. He's never let an injury take him out for long.

The hope is that Brett Veach did enough to surround Mahomes with talent that can take the load off of his shoulders. He's helped beef up the run game, which should be nice for Mahomes to lean on as he readjusts to life after the injury he sustained in December.

The Chiefs have been on another level since Mahomes became the starter in 2018, reaching the AFC Championship game in his first seven seasons. This past year the streak was broken and the Chiefs failed to qualify for the playoffs altogether in what was a bizarre season for a team accustomed to success at the highest level.

Hopefully, Mahomes' recovery continues to go smoothly and he's back to his old tricks when he takes the field again.
