The Kansas City Chiefs will be back in the comfy confines of Arrowhead Stadium this week. Hosting the New York Jets is seen as a reprieve following a two-game road stretch against the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos.

How does the all-time series history stack up between the Chiefs and Jets? These two AFC combatants originally met as AFL counterparts, and overall, the series has been largely back and forth throughout their history.

Chiefs have mostly steady results over Jets under Andy Reid

Sunday will be the 42nd all-time meeting between the Chiefs and Jets, including playoffs. According to The Football Database, Kansas City holds a slight lead in the series at 21-19-1.

In recent history, the Chiefs have won two in a row and four of their last five matchups against the Jets, all during Andy Reid's tenure in Kansas City. Of those four victories, K.C. topped New York by at least 14 points three times. The most recent victory, however, came by just three points.

The only loss the Chiefs suffered to the Jets under Reid came during the downswing of the 2017 regular season. It was a wacky year for K.C. altogether, starting amazingly before the team hit a devastating losing stretch.

That loss included plenty of highlights for the Chiefs. Alex Smith ripped off a 70-yard run, while Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce each finished with two receiving touchdowns. Those two also combined for 279 of the 366 yards Smith threw for that day. It was a wild 38-31 Jets victory, yet the most memorable moment from that Chiefs loss may have been Marcus Peters getting frustrated and heaving a penalty flag into the stands.

Early meetings and playoff history

Before the Reid era, the Jets won five of seven matchups against the Chiefs from 1998 to 2011. But even with that favorable run for New York, the all-time series has stayed relatively even throughout its history. The Jets have enjoyed a few three-game winning streaks against the Chiefs, but Kansas City always seemed to answer with a strong run of its own. K.C. has won three in a row multiple times in this series as well.

In fact, each team secured a three-game winning streak within the first six matchups against one another, back when both franchises were in the AFL. For those who do not remember, the first six meetings took place when the teams were known as the Dallas Texans and New York Titans.

We now know the Texans and Titans to be AFC South rivals. But back then, the Titans beat the Texans in the first three matchups of this series. Dallas then topped New York three consecutive times afterwards.

As far as postseason meetings go, both teams have split two playoff matchups. New York defeated Kansas City 35-15 in an AFC Wild Card game in December 1986. But from both a franchise standpoint and league history standpoint, the Chiefs' playoff win over the Jets is more notable.

Kansas City beat New York 13-6 in an AFL Divisional playoff game. This took place in December 1969. That victory would be the start of a playoff run that eventually led to the Chiefs winning their first ever Super Bowl. Kansas City emerged as the winners in Super Bowl IV over the Minnesota Vikings a few weeks after defeating the Jets in the AFL Divisional round.
