Chiefs trade proposal lands Patrick Mahomes a proven wide receiver

It just might work.

Stop me if you've heard this one before but the Kansas City Chiefs' wide receiver position could end up being a problem this year. Despite the position being an area of weakness a season ago, Brett Veach opted not to address it much during the offseason. The two most notable moves he made at wide receiver were re-signing Tyquan Thornton and spending a fifth-round pick on Cyrus Allen.

With Rashee Rice's off-the-field issues, it's safe to say that wide receiver is going to continue to be looked at as an area of concern for Kansas City. That's why Graham Wilker of Musket Fire proposed a trade that would send Kayshon Boutte to the Chiefs in exchange for a fifth-round pick in next year's draft and potentially a player as well (he threw out Felix Anudike-Uzomah as an option).

"While it would hurt to make a deal with the devil, Kansas City is a team with the need for Boutte and the quarterback to help his career flourish.

"It wouldn't surprise me to see Boutte involved in his own trade talks, as he'll be looking for a place to maximize his talents. The Chiefs have Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton atop their depth chart. They have a need at receiver, and would likely be willing to offer better draft capital than other teams would for the former LSU wide out.

"A fifth-round pick seems a reasonable price tag for Boutte, but it isn't impossible the Patriots look to add a player in the deal. Perhaps a seventh-round selection and former first-round pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah could get the deal done? They were able to resurrect K'Lavon Chaisson's career, so having another bite at the apple wouldn't be a bad idea, either."

Proposed trade for Kayshon Boutte would be a no-brainer for Chiefs

In this hypothetical trade, the Chiefs would send a fifth-round pick and potentially Anudike-Uzomah to the Patriots in exchange for Boutte. This feels like the kind of deal that would make sense for Kansas City, especially if they only had to part with a Day 3 draft pick. Even if FAU was a part of the deal though, that'd be a player the Chiefs would likely be okay parting ways with considering he's looked at as a bust by the majority of the fan base.

If Boutte joined the Chiefs, he'd give Patrick Mahomes another weapon to throw to. He was a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by New England and while his rookie year was largely forgettable, he popped off the page in Year 2, at least for a sixth-rounder. Boutte finished the 2024 campaign with 589 yards and three touchdowns. He followed that up with a 551-yard and six touchdown season in 2025, proving that he can be a pretty good target.

At this point, why not bring in Boutte and see if he can be the target that Mahomes needs? Wide receiver has been a difficult position to fill for the Chiefs but they have to keep throwing different things at the wall and seeing what sticks. Boutte could potentially be that difference-maker for them and only giving up a Day 3 pick (and potentially a first-round draft bust) would be well worth it.
