The Kansas City Chiefs have a proven history of moving off of their original position in the given draft order during the Brett Veach era, so it's no surprise to see them doing so again in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The surprise, however, in this instance is that Veach was willing to move back.

Veach has always been seen as a bit of a maverick around the National Football League with his penchant for always moving up, from the very first pick in his tenure when he moved up in the 2018 NFL Draft's second round to get pass rusher Breeland Speaks. (That one didn't work out so well, but things have improved since then.)

On Thursday's opening round, the Chiefs worked out a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles to send No. 31 in exchange for the No. 32 pick—just sliding back a single spot. Perhaps the Chiefs felt a bit uncomfortable in the penultimate spot and decided to go back into their "normal" role at No. 32 overall—the spot reserved each season for the defending Super Bowl champs.

The Eagles used the pick to take linebacker Jihaad Campbell, widely praised as the best player available at his position in this draft class.

The trade allowed the Chiefs to pick up No. 164 in the draft, which helps fill in a massive gap between picks on Day 3 for the Chiefs on Saturday. Instead of picking at No. 133 and then waiting until their three picks scheduled for the seventh round, starting at No. 226 overall, the Chiefs now have another pick in their arsenal to add more depth and talent.

The Chiefs now have 9 official selections remaining, with the next one scheduled for Friday in Round 2 at No. 63 overall.
