Chiefs' Super Bowl 61 odds are strong but they're not the favorites to win the AFC

Despite an undefeated start to the season, the Chiefs are not the favorites to represent the AFC in Super Bowl 61.

While it still sometimes feels like the NFL just came back not too long ago, the fact of the matter is that we're wildly already a third of the way through this 2026 regular season. And given the way the 2025 campaign played out, the Kansas City Chiefs have to be absolutely thrilled with how this new year has gone thus far.

After kicking things off by downing the defending division champion Denver Broncos in blowout fashion in Week 1, Andy Reid & Co. got a little scare in Week 2 before taking down the Indianapolis Colts in overtime. An easy Week 3 win over the Miami Dolphins followed, but things weren't so easy in Week 4 against an improved Las Vegas Raiders team, although the Chiefs still walked away with a three-point victory.

And following the early Week 5 bye, Kansas City came back this past Sunday with its third victory within the division, easily disposing of the still-winless Los Angeles Chargers by a score of 22-6.

As in years past (just not last season, of course), the beauty of this team is in the balance, as Patrick Mahomes and new weapon Kenneth Walker III have the offense ranked first in the league in total yards per game (414.0) and fifth in scoring (28.0), while Steve Spagnuolo's defense has allowed the eighth-fewest total yards per contest (306.0) and the second-fewest points (16.6).

At 5-0, Kansas City is one of just three undefeated teams remaining, the other two being the San Francisco 49ers (6-0) and the surprising Minnesota Vikings (5-0). So, as one would imagine, the Chiefs are right near the top of the Super Bowl 61 odds at this one-third point of the season. That said, though, they're not currently the favorite to win the AFC.

As you can see, the Niners sit in the top spot at +540, but the Chiefs are right there in a tie for second at +750 alongside the Buffalo Bills, who, like Kansas City did a couple of weeks back, are set for their bye after earning a three-point win over the Raiders.

As you undoubtedly noticed, however, Buffalo holds a slight edge as the AFC favorite at +395, with the Chiefs sitting in second at +440.

Now, while the Bills are 5-1, their only loss coming in Week 4 to the New England Patriots, they're nowhere near as balanced as Kansas City. Yes, Josh Allen has his offense ranked sixth in total yards per game (387.7) and first in scoring (32.8), but the Buffalo defense has surrendered the second-most yards per contest (386.8) and the fifth-most points (28.5).

It's obviously working out fine for now, but they're playing with fire, as only one of their five wins has been by double digits. Nobody's saying they don't deserve to be near the top of this list, but do they really deserve to be ahead of the Chiefs in the AFC column? That's obviously debatable, and it'll obviously be very interesting to see how things play out when the two teams clash in Orchard Park on Thanksgiving night.

Buffalo aside, when it comes to just the AFC West, while we didn't list those odds above, Kansas City is naturally the heavy favorite there at the moment at -250, with the Broncos sitting in second at +215. The Raiders are in a distant third at +2250, while the Chargers are obviously bringing up the rear at a whopping +15000.

The Chiefs will look to continue their hot start in prime time this Sunday night, as they take on the defending champion Seattle Seahawks.
