The Kansas City Chiefs haven't experienced what they're going currently through in quite some time. They're 6-5 with their most likely path into the playoffs being as a wild card team. That is rare for this team in the Patrick Mahomes era considering they've won the AFC West every year he's been in the league so getting into the postseason as a wild card would be odd, to say the least.
Despite that 6-5 record after Week 12, the Chiefs do still have a path to not just a 10th straight division title but the two-seed as well, as crazy as that sounds. Normally if I said something like to you about a team with a 6-5 record that's lost a lot of games that could come back to bite them as far as tiebreakers go, you'd probably roll your eyes and think "How likely is that going to happen?"
Honestly, I won't lie to you, the chances of it happening aren't great obviously given the massive hole the Chiefs have put themselves in. That being said, the scenario of K.C. being the two-seed isn't all that far-fetched and is something that could realistically happen. Explanation time!
According to Red Tribe Cinema on X, the Chiefs can win their 10th straight AFC West title IF they win their final six games and "[The] Broncos go 2-2 against Chargers, Jaguars, Commanders and Packers. Only one AFC loss required". If those things happen and the Chiefs slide back into first place in the division, the two-seed would still be in play but only if the Colts drop two games against either the Jaguars, Seahawks, or Texans.
Chiefs surprisingly still have a path to the two seed in the playoffs
Now, again, the chances of this happening aren't great and the Chiefs only have themselves to blame for that. They choked away the Jaguars game and lost other winnable games as well, which is why they're sitting here at 6-5 and we're talking about how they COULD still win the division and end up as the two-seed but probably won't.
With that said, this scenario playing out isn't all that wild and the rest of the league is probably expecting it to happen given what a headache the Chiefs have been in recent years. They finish the year against the Cowboys, Texans, Chargers, Titans, Broncos, and Raiders with the Texans, Chargers, and Broncos games taking place at Arrowhead where the Chiefs have been great this season. Would it shock anyone if they managed to go 6-0 down the stretch?
If they do finish the year with an undefeated record in their final six games, that'd put Kansas City at 12-5 and they'd have to hope the Broncos drop two other games (plus their matchup against the Chiefs obviously) and lose out on the tiebreaking scenarios. It's honestly not that crazy of a path and is something that past Chiefs teams would definitely be able to accomplish if they found themselves in this situation.
The big question is if this Chiefs team can pull it off and even if they can, will the teams that need to give them help give them that help? We'll have to wait and see how all of this pans out but it sure would be funny if the Chiefs, who looked dead in the water early on against the Colts, found a way to annoy the rest of the league once again. Bring on the chaos!
