After practicing in training camp for several days with an extra roster spot available to them, the Kansas City Chiefs have finally found a worthy candidate to join the offense. Per Matt Derrick, the Chiefs have signed rookie free agent wide receiver Jeff Weimer to a contract.
Weimer was a participant in the team's rookie minicamp back in May and joins former Iowa defensive end Ethan Hurkett as the newest signings to a roster that had two slots open up due to injuries. Hurkett was also with Weimer in rookie minicamp earlier this spring.
A 6-foot-2, 211-pound receiver out of Salinas, California, Weimer’s journey to Kansas City is a circuitous one with a five-stop college journey that began at the junior-college level and only reached the Power Four last fall. Weimer originally graduated high school in 2018 and started at Hartnell College before moving to City College of San Francisco, where he was part of a JuCo national championship team. He landed at UNLV for the 2022 season and caught 26 passes for 278 yards and 1 touchdown across seven games.Â
Weimer then sat out the 2023 season for personal reasons before resurfacing at Idaho State in 2024, where he broke out in a hurry with 75 receptions for 1,016 yards and 6 touchdowns to become just the ninth 1,000-yard receiver in program history and earn First-Team All-Big Sky honors.
The well-traveled West Virginia product is the newest addition to the Chiefs' roster.
Weimer used that production to move up to West Virginia for a final season in 2025, which came only after he won a lawsuit against the NCAA to secure an extra year of eligibility, but the results on the field were rather modest: 21 catches, 383 yards, 2 scores at an 18.2 yards/catch clip. Weimer’s lack of real Power 4 production deserves an asterisk in that the Mountaineers cycled through four starting quarterbacks a year ago and struggled to move the ball for much of the year. Reimer was Dane Brugler's No. 248 -anked wide receiver in this year's draft class.
The Chiefs already have a number of undrafted free agents competing at wide receiver this summer, but the position is beset by short-term injuries right now, which has opened an unexpected door for Weimer. Xavier Worthy left camp practice early on Saturday before a day off on Sunday. As the pads come on for the first time on Monday, the Chiefs need more bodies at the position.
Weimer is going to have to make quick work of things if he's going to last, however. Players like Jeff Caldwell, Xavier Loyd, Omari Evans, and Jacob De Jesus are already more established UDFAs in camp. Andrew Armstrong and Jason Brownlee are also competing for fringe roster spots alongside the team's predictable corps up front: Rashee Rice, Worthy, Jalen Royals, Tyquan Thornton, and Allen.
