It's one of the more well-known weaknesses in professional sports. The Kansas City Chiefs have been unable to find a consistent WR1 for years. It's not for lack of trying; they've spent top-60 draft picks on Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy, but even when those two are healthy, the Chiefs' passing attack lacks a consistent answer.
The need for a top wideout is more obvious than ever this season. Somehow, the absence of one Tyquan Thornton has sent Kansas City's offense spiraling.
It's time to find a solution — a real solution. No more shopping in the bargain bin. No more draft-day bets on incomplete prospects. With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the Chiefs have an opportunity to solve their receiver issues for good.
The answer goes by the name Garrett Wilson, and he might just be available at the right price.
Chiefs should be pushing for a blockbuster Garrett Wilson trade
There's no guarantee that the Jets are even willing to move on from Wilson. They just gave him a massive contract extension last year, and he's an important part of the structure they've built to support their quarterback of the future, whoever that may be.
But New York has proved itself to be open to moving on from star players, even ones on new contracts. The Jets sent Sauce Gardner away at the 2025 trade deadline in a shocking deal. Who's to say that they wouldn't make a similar move in 2026?
Like the Gardner trade, a Wilson move would likely take an offer that New York can't refuse. That may land in the ballpark of a first-round pick plus a bit more, using the Denver Broncos' Jaylen Waddle deal as a reference point.
Wilson has expressed some frustration with his situation recently, which may soften his market. Of course, he hasn't requested a trade (and likely won't), but he's clearly upset by the Jets' lack of winning.
The star wideout told reporters, "Yeah, I want to be here, man. I want to win games and that's the one thing we've been missing on here. I love it here. Do I love it more than I love winning? Nah, to be completely honest, but I'm hopeful."
It's not an open door by any means, but it could be the crack that the Chiefs need to work their way into a deal. If I'm Brett Veach, I'm offering the Jets a 2027 first-rounder and a 2028 third-rounder and putting the ball in their court.
Chiefs' WR trade options outside of Garrett Wilson may not move the needle
We don't need to break down the Chiefs' need for a wide receiver. Turn on a game for a few minutes, and it will become obvious. But as the trade deadline approaches, it's important to note that Kansas City doesn't just need any receiver.
Sure, they could make a move for a cast-off pass-catcher like Isaac TeSlaa, Kayshon Boutte, or Calvin Ridley, but are any of those options moving the needle?
The Chiefs need a field-stretcher to replace Thornton, and yes, the receivers mentioned above could fill that role to some extent, but they also need a third-down option outside of Travis Kelce. Otherwise, any team that can shut down the running game can shut down the entire offense.
Kansas City won't get by with low-cost moves here. This is a major problem, and it requires a major solution.
A splash trade for a star receiver like Wilson would mortgage the future, absolutely, but it's still a move worth making. Dropped into this offense, the Jets wideout would help form one of the most dangerous attacks in the league.
If there's any willingness on the Jets' end to move Wilson, the Chiefs should already be on the phone.
