Kansas City Chiefs fans are going to have to get used to hearing people criticize their wide receiver situation. After all, this is a group that didn't do much a season ago and yet, for the most part, Brett Veach opted to run it back with the same crew.
The starting trio will likely consist of Rashee Rice, Tyquan Thornton, and Xavier Worthy unless a trade is made before the season begins. Justin Carter of FanSided thinks he knows just the trade that the Chiefs could make to fix their wide receiver woes.
Carter proposed that the Chiefs strike a deal with the Tennessee Titans for Calvin Ridley. In his proposal, Carter suggested the Chiefs send over a fifth-round pick along with Kristian Fulton to the Titans in exchange for Ridley.
"The Kansas City Chiefs need wide receiver help. Right now, it looks like Tyquan Thornton is set for a larger role than Tyquan Thornton should have, and the depth behind the top three players falls off fast. Jalen Royals is your WR4. Your WR5 is...either Cyrus Allen or Jimmy Holiday? Very obvious that adding Ridley would be a good move here," Carter wrote. "Is a fifth-round pick a bit rich for Ridley at this point? Sure, but Kansas City is also paying to move off of Fulton and open up additional cap space, as this move would also increase Kansas City's cap space by $2.3 million."
Chiefs would be wise to avoid this proposed Calvin Ridley trade
Look, it's not that Ridley isn't a talented player. He's two years removed from hitting 1,000 yards receiving so clearly he's got plenty left in the tank. The pushback here is more surrounding the fact that the Chiefs trading draft capital for a 31-year-old receiver who missed half the season last year probably wouldn't be the brightest move to make.
The Chiefs' brass has shown at this point that they feel confident in the group of receivers they have. Maybe it's not the group we all want per se but it's the group we have. Until they take the field and show what they're capable of, all we can do is hope that they can figure it all out and put together a productive season.
Ridley wouldn't be a terrible addition to this squad but giving up a fifth-round pick for him just wouldn't be good business by the Chiefs. Better to just stick with what they've got and maybe if the price for Ridley came down later, then they could strike a deal. For now though, pass.
