The Kansas City Chiefs have had a very explosive start to the season, with two straight wins against their division rival, the Denver Broncos, and another AFC team with a great offense, the Indianapolis Colts. There have been many guys who have shown electric starts to the season, such as veterans like Kenneth Walker, the NFL's rushing leader with 290 yards, and Patrick Mahomes, who is fifth in passing yards after two weeks.
A few of the Chiefs' rookies have shown good promise, especially on defense with Mansoor Delane and R Mason Thomas. In a position group that requires very good depth, Thomas has been able to provide that in these first few weeks.
R Mason Thomas' Week 1 hot start
In their Week 1 opener against the Denver Broncos, Thomas did not disappoint while playing a backup role on the Chiefs' defensive line. Thomas tallied 2 total tackles (1 solo and 1 assist), 1 TFL, 1 sack, and 1 QB hit:

Despite limited snaps, he was able to generate pressure from multiple types of rushes, whether it was a three- or four-man rush. He aided the Chiefs' defense by keeping Bo Nix on his toes, along with the rest of the Chiefs' defensive line, taking him out of the pocket and forcing him to scramble and not get his feet set. Thomas played a pivotal role in the Chiefs' Week 1 victory.
Pass rushing and play recognition prowess
Thomas has shown great prowess on passing downs. While he only generated a QB hit in Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts, he still showed he can make meaningful plays throughout the game. We can watch the play below, where Thomas was able to keep his eyes on Daniel Jones, recognize that he was not following his blockers and was rolling to the other side, and make a swift burst toward him to pressure him and force an incomplete pass:

To add to this, Thomas also has the fourth-best pass-rush win rate among rookie edge rushers after Week 2. Coach Steve Spagnuolo loves to use him on passing downs, and the trend suggests that he will be a pass-rush specialist for the season.
Overall
Without getting too far ahead of myself, R Mason Thomas has shown great flashes in these first two games of his rookie season. The pass-rush attributes are there, which are vital for this era of football, and the film shows it.
If Thomas continues on this path, we could see him develop into a key edge rusher for the Chiefs for years to come.
