Brett Veach had his work cut out for him this offseason after the Kansas City Chiefs posted a losing record for the first time in over a decade. Veach had to ensure that he set this team up for a bounce back year and, for the most part, he did a solid job.
Cody Williams of FanSided gave the Chiefs a B grade for their offseason efforts and the best move he picked from the team shouldn't surprise anyone. Williams said that Kansas City's best move of the offseason was "Aggressively signing Kenneth Walker III", which isn't a surprise whatsoever.
"Despite drafting some explosive athletes, the Kansas City Chiefs clearly recognized the need to add more of that element this offseason. While it's expensive, that's why I love the Kenneth Walker signing more than some."
Chiefs' best move of the offseason was signing Kenneth Walker III
The Chiefs haven't had a dominant rushing attack in quite some time and Walker helps gives them that. Not only did they ink the reigning Super Bowl MVP to a three-year deal but they also drafted Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson in the fifth round, further improving their run game and helping take the pressure off of Patrick Mahomes' shoulders as he returns from injury.
Walker, a former second-round pick by the Seahawks in 2022 out of Michigan State, immediately broke onto the scene for Seattle, rushing for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie. This past season was also a great year for him, as he had 1,027 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He made a huge name for himself during the playoffs, however, especially in Super Bowl 60, winning the MVP honors for the big game.
Now he joins a Chiefs backfield that desperately needs him. The Chiefs haven't heavily invested in the running back position since Mahomes has been the quarterback but clearly, Veach recognized that this offense will need to build on that area. If the Chiefs can lean on the run a little more, it'll take pressure off of Mahomes and open the offense up more. That should make this team more dangerous.
It's not shocking at all that Williams picked the Walker signing as Kansas City's best offseason move. It was the biggest move from this team and one that they needed to make to ensure that Mahomes is getting all of the help he needs. Now, if only they'd have put that same energy into fixing the wide receiver problem, then this offseason would have truly been a success.
