For the past few years, Kansas City Chiefs fans have been clamoring for Brett Veach to find real running backs to add to the offense. And during that time, Veach ignored those cries for help, continuing to run it back with the likes of Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, among others.
The injury to Patrick Mahomes near the end of the 2025 season forced Veach to finally do something about the lackluster run game in Kansas City. Veach signed reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker and fans are really optimistic about what Walker can bring to this offense. Will his presence be enough to totally revamp the unit?
NFL insider Albert Breer seems to think that will be the case. While attending Chiefs training camp on Tuesday, Breer was asked about the new-look Kansas City offense and what we should expect from it now that Walker is in town. He said a new coordinator taking over the offense alone will surely shake things up.
"Andy [Reid]'s obviously still running the offense, but you do go from Matt Nagy back to Eric Bieniemy, I do think there's going to be more of a commitment to the run game. I think there's going to be a little bit of a shift playing under center a little bit more with Kenneth Walker here," Breer said on The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday. "... that's going to serve a couple of purposes. Number one... it's going to help Mahomes as he comes back from the knee [injury] because there's always an adjustment. He's looked great. He hasn't missed anything. He's been out here every day... It's also going to unlock some things in the passing game for them... I do think that the Chiefs offense is going to look a little bit different... A guy like Walker can unlock a lot of different things for them and he was such an important part of what the Seahawks did... They are going to have a little bit of a different look on offense versus what they've had the last couple of years."
Kenneth Walker could unlock whole new Chiefs offense
It'd be great if the Chiefs really did lean more on their run game, as that's something they haven't been able to do as much recently. For whatever reason, Reid has tended to skew away from running the ball even when doing so makes sense but now that he has Walker at his disposal, that hopefully will not be the case anymore.
The fact of the matter is that the Chiefs need to be better running the ball. For one, it gives their offense more versatility and allows them to keep defenses on their toes more. Another and more important reason is that it'll take pressure off of Mahomes' shoulders as he readjusts to life in the NFL after his injury.
If the Chiefs can consistently run the ball well, the sky is truly the limit for this team in 2026.
