Chiefs newcomer makes instant impact with Mahomes in preseason debut

Tyquan Thornton isn't the only new WR turning heads for the Chiefs this preseason.

Jason Brownlee has officially entered the chat.

For most of the Chiefs' preseason, the conversation around Kansas City's wide receiver room has been the buzz of Tyquan Thornton and the fringe roster hopes of Skyy Moore (at least among players who aren't obvious locks for the active roster). But Brownlee, in his first season with the Chiefs, isn't ready to cede the spotlight so quickly.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense were gifted excellent field position on the opening drive of the game after Christian Roland-Wallace forced a fumble and rookie Brashard Smith recovered it on the opening kickoff. Arizona Cardinals wideout Greg Dortch coughed up the ball, and the Chiefs only had to go 13 yards for their first touchdown of the preseason—an incredible catch by Brownlee.

With the Chiefs at the goal line, Mahomes leaned on Brownlee's length as a 6'3" receiver and threw it high for the promising receiver to haul it in. Brownlee's extension was impressive as he came down with the score.

Brownlee is no stranger to turning heads in the preseason. He was a coaching favorite with the New York Jets for the last two years, and even made the active roster both years for Robert Saleh's team, but found himself staying on the sidelines last season after earning 5 starts during his rookie year.

The Chiefs first landed Brownlee last January and signed him to their practice squad in the hopes of seeing him up close and getting ahead of the 2025 offseason. Brownlee has looked good in training camp in St. Joseph, even as Thornton has been getting more hype for his chemistry with Mahomes and elite speed.

Brownlee brought down 55 catches for 891 passing yards and 8 touchdowns at Southern Miss in his final season before joining New York as an undrafted free agent.

The Chiefs have a legit competition for those final spots at the position, especially knowing that Rashee Rice's suspension is looming. Hollywood Brown's injury could also be a factor, depending on how long it takes him to recover from an ankle concern.

As for his role with the Chiefs, if Brownlee continues to showcase that he can use that length in such impactful ways, it's going to be hard to keep him away from the active roster.
