Chiefs looming as intriguing lifeline for stranded Jauan Jennings

There's a serious difference between Jauan Jennings' asking price and what teams are willing to pay.

Jauan Jennings has to be wondering where things went wrong.

It's safe to assume that someone, at some point, provided Jennings with the wrong advice on how the NFL free-agent market would play out in his favor. The asking price was already known to be bigger than what the San Francisco 49ers were comfortable with paying, which is why he was allowed to hit the open market in the first place. As it turns out, the Niners weren't the only team with sticker shock.

Jennings is still available as a free-agent receiver, and most teams would find him to be a nice upgrade on the options already on the roster. However, it appears that interested teams have balked at the price tag, which has left him sitting on the NFL's store shelves while lesser talented receivers found homes for the 2026 season and beyond.

There's a serious difference between Jauan Jennings' asking price and what teams are willing to pay.

A recent report from Matt Barrow and Vic Tafur of The Athletic polled unnamed league executives who said his demands were too great. Take that with a grain of salt, because such anonymous quotes can be given for any number of biased reasons. But one "head coach" went on record to say, "He’s outplayed his talent."

It was less than a year ago that Jennings was asking for a new contract extension or a trade away from the 49ers. General manager John Lynch refused to give him either one, but he did at least restructure his contract to provide some fresh incentives with greater production on the two-year deal he'd already signed in 2024.

Just over a week ago, Lynch spoke about Jennings' future: "Jauan’s one of my favorite players and one of Kyle’s favorite players. He’ll find a good home. And I think Jauan will go play great football for someone." That's a polite way of saying that they've moved on, which is what has left Jennings waiting for his next chance.

It's all interesting to watch from the perspective of a team like the Chiefs, with a clear need for another reliable pass catcher or two for Patrick Mahomes. The lack of a suspension—for now—for Rashee Rice alleviates some of the urgency at the position. The re-signing of Tyquan Thornton also bolsters the unit. But Xavier Worthy's already played through myriad injuries, and Rice hasn't played a full season since 2023. Thornton has never been more than a spare offensive part.

The Chiefs also watched JuJu Smith-Schuster and Hollywood Brown hit free agency, which should open up space for Thornton and Jalen Royals to take on greater roles, but both are wild cards, and there's room for another playmaker. This is why Jennings is so interesting for Kansas City—at the right price, of course.

Spotrac has Jennings' market value at $22 million, which feels exorbitant, but the going rate at the position has climbed considerably with cap increases. Jennings had 9 touchdowns a year ago and 975 receiving yards in 2024. However, such production is hard to separate from Kyle Shanahan's system. Think of how teams have a tough time judging Chiefs' offensive coaches when enmeshed with Andy Reid and Mahomes and you get some idea.

That said, Jennings has blossomed into a productive receiver whose length and hands would be great assets for the Chiefs at the right price. He's earned a raise, to be sure. But no one has any idea where the actual price will land in the end. If he's willing to take a year to build further market value, a place like K.C. could be an enticing option.
