Chiefs have nothing to brag about after barely beating Raiders on Black Friday
By Matt Conner
Is this how 11-1 is supposed to feel? Asking for a friend.
The reason for the question is because after watching the Kansas City Chiefs earn their second win against the Las Vegas Raiders this season—their 11th win in 12 games—it's hard to summon any feel-good vibes.
It sounds ridiculous to say that out loud and even worse to write it out. Every NFL fan base would trade places with Chiefs Kingdom in a heartbeat. They're leading their division by a country mille in the AFC West. They're in sole possession of first place in the AFC and headed for that coveted bye week. They're getting plenty of reinforcements down the stretch as players return from injuries, and they're aiming for a record third consecutive Super Bowl title.
Still, it's impossible to find anyone in Chiefs Kingdom willing to brag right now—or it should be—after watching their performance against the Raiders in Week 13. It was a game in which Ameer Abdullah, at age 31, is suddenly returning kicks like Devin Hester. It's a game in which someone named Sincere McCormick is moving the chains in the fourth quarter. Even Aidan "Never Scramble" O'Connell was moving his feet in order to make plays.
With 2:03 left on the clock, the Chiefs gave the ball back to the Raiders while only up by two points. Instead of going for it on a 4th-and-2 to close out the game, the Chiefs gifted the Raiders a free shot to drive down the field and kick a field goal, which is exactly what they did until their rookie center somehow fumbled the football on a snap when the rest of the team wasn't ready. (Insert legit tanking questions here.)
It's odd to watch the Chiefs in recent weeks. The defense is giving up big plays. The team as a whole is playing down to the talent level of its opponents. Watching DeAndre Hopkins drop a pass or Mahomes overthrow Travis Kelce multiple times makes you realize just how often the Chiefs shoot themselves in the foot week after week.
While 11-1 sounds dominant, the truth is that the metrics think of the Chiefs as much closer to the pack than they are.
The good news is that the Chiefs have clinched a playoff spot already. Even if they rolled over for the rest of the regular season, they'd be plenty rested before preparing for another deep postseason run and title defense. But no one wants to see the Chiefs playing this poorly—or needing this much luck. Here's a sample of just what some fans were saying after the game:
Despite the lucky win on Friday, some still won't give K.C. any credit.
It's been a long time since a convincing victory for K.C.
He's not wrong, you know?
The best summation.
