The Kansas City Chiefs are going for history in Super Bowl LIX, as a win gives them the first three-peat in the Super Bowl era. There's a chance for them to make another kind of history too, and this kind would put them in the same group as eight other teams in NFL history, including the 2020 Chiefs.
A win on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles would mean that the Chiefs beat every team they played during the 2024 regular season and playoffs. No, obviously they didn't go undefeated but the only two losses they'd have on their resume at that point would be against the Broncos and Bills, who the Chiefs beat at other points during the season (the Broncos in Week 10 and the Bills in the AFC Championship Game).
If the Chiefs win Super Bowl 59, they'll have defeated every team they played in 2024 season.
Of course, this isn't something that many people will talk or even really care about but it is interesting and only eight other teams in the history of the NFL can say they've done it. I mentioned the 2020 Chiefs being in this rare group and the other six teams were the 1972 Dolphins, 1990 Giants, 1990 49ers, Washington in 1991, 2004 Patriots, 2004 Steelers, and 2007 Patriots.
This list is fascinating because while this feels like an accomplishment that doesn't happen often, it's happened twice in the same year on two separate occasions. The Chiefs would also be the second franchise to have their team do this twice, joining the Patriots who beat every team in 2004 and 2007.
A win on Sunday gives the Chiefs the biggest piece of history they could possibly own, as they'd have pulled off the three-peat but it's also fun to learn about these other little bits of history they can make as well.
