Kansas City Chiefs fans just watched the door get slammed shut on their Breece Hall hopes

The Chiefs sorely lacked an explosive element in their offense in 2025, specifically in the running game. While Kareem Hunt was effective in short-yardage situations, the attack posed no threat of a breakaway touchdown. The mediocrity of the running back room had fans clamoring for an upgrade in the offseason.

Naturally, top free agent back Breece Hall was floated as a fit. The New York Jets star has flashed elite talent so far in the NFL. He is the exact type of back the Chiefs are missing, showcasing enough speed to give opposing defensive coordinators nightmares.

Now it looks like Kansas City’s chances of signing the running back in free agency are gone. Jets general manager Darren Mougey stated that Hall will stay in New York next season. Per insider Connor Hughes, the Jets are expected to either sign the back to an extension or franchise tag him. Unfortunately, the Chiefs will be forced to look at other options.

Chiefs’ Breece Hall hopes dashed by Jets GM

Hall was set to be one of the biggest names on the free agent market this offseason. While he hasn’t quite shown the consistency that fans might hope for, he is one of the most talented backs in football. The Chiefs were expected to be one of the teams bidding for him in free agency.

Per Spotrac, Hall’s estimated market value was about $10.4 million per year. That would make him the ninth-highest paid running back in the NFL. It would be a steep price for the Chiefs to pay for a position they’ve barely invested in recently, but Hall’s impact could have made the deal more than worth it.

Now, it looks like that won’t be an option. Kansas City will have to look elsewhere to find an upgrade at the running back position. Other free agents, like Kenneth Walker III and Travis Etienne, could draw some interest. If they focus on the draft instead, Notre Dame prospect Jeremiyah Love is an interesting fit. But each of these options comes with a major downside. Walker and Etienne are both limited in different areas, and the Chiefs would need to use a first-round draft pick to get Love.

Hall’s fit with Kansas City made perfect sense. Unless Mougey is bluffing, the dream won’t become a reality this offseason.
