Chiefs' dream free agent target reminds them why he'll never be available

Adding this standout playmaker would be a home-run move for Kansas City, albeit a pipe dream.

It's no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs badly need a counterpunch to their passing attack led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. They can greatly benefit from adding another element to the offense, specifically in the backfield, namely Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III.

The Chiefs' scoring unit has become one-dimensional in recent years, which reared its ugly head in 2025. Their ability to move the ball on the ground, or lack thereof, is a glaring weakness that has allowed opposing defenses to focus on Mahomes. Walker, who's an unrestricted free agent this offseason, certainly profiles as a more than viable option.

Walker was spectacular in the Seahawks' Super Bowl LX victory over the New England Patriots. He gave the Chiefs (and other prospective suitors) something to think about in the coming weeks. However, in a way, his performance on the NFL's grandest stage was somewhat of a tease, because it's hard to envision him leaving Seattle.

Kansas City projects to have the least amount of cap space in the league in 2026. That alone makes bringing in someone of Walker's caliber and presumed price tag an uphill battle. Nevertheless, the Seahawks have made their interest in retaining the Super Bowl LX MVP clear — and that was before his championship heroics.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald expressed his desire to re-sign Walker on Opening Night, and the feeling is reportedly mutual, per Kevin Patra of NFL.com:

"I've been here four years, so you know I've gotten to know a lot of stuff about Seattle, and you know a lot of the city, and I feel like they feel good about me as well," Walker said. "So, if it was my choice, though, I'd definitely stay."

Bummer. Of course, a lot can change between now and March, but Chiefs Kingdom was probably hoping for a different tune from either/both sides. Instead, they got a Walker-Seahawks public love fest, which culminated in him propelling Seattle to its first title since 2013.

Seattle leaned on Walker throughout the playoffs, especially after losing the thunder to his lightning in bruiser back Zach Charbonnet to a torn ACL. He was the focal point of their offense against the Patriots, constantly ripping off chunk gains and making history along the way. The 2022 second-round pick ran for 135 yards on 27 carries in the Big Game, plus two receptions for 26 yards.
