Another new name has been added to the Kansas City Chiefs' coaching staff as part of an overhaul informed by a devastating six-win campaign in 2025. As Andy Reid and his coordinators retool the team's leadership structure, they've decided to add Andre Curtis on the defensive side.
Curtis, a veteran coach, has been officially introduced as the Chiefs' new defensive backs and safeties coach. He comes to Kansas City with 20 years of experience coaching in the National Football League. Last season, he was the passing game coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.
While Curtis was in a new post in 2025, he's been a defensive backs coach at several stops along the way, including a three-year stint with the Chicago Bears from 2022-24 and the Seattle Seahawks from 2015-21.
The Chiefs have hired away a defensive backs coach from the Dallas Cowboys.
It's interesting that the Chiefs have added an experienced DBs coach at this stage, along with C.J. Cox as a quality control assistant, who was formerly the defensive backs coach at Coastal Carolina. Fans can only hope that doesn't mean Dave Merritt is leaving anytime soon. The Chiefs have enjoyed exceptional results in the secondary over the years, with a proven ability to draft and develop players that keeps the pipeline fresh and the costs low on the books.
Most of the team's coaching changes have come on the offensive side with the departure of Matt Nagy to become offensive coordinator for the New York Giants under new head coach John Harbaugh. Eric Bieniemy was hired away from the Chicago Bears to reunite with Reid as his OC, having served in the same role for five seasons from 2017-21.
New positional coaches for Reid's staff in 2026 include running backs coach DeMarco Murray, who was hired away from the University of Oklahoma; wide receivers coach Chad O'Shea, who joins K.C. after several seasons with the Cleveland Browns; and quality control coaches Nate Pagan, who was formerly coaching wideouts at Villanova, and Cox, as previously mentioned. Terry Bradden was also brought back as a defensive line assistant after a year with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
