Chiefs defense might ruin another rookie QB’s debut if Giants make switch

We're not sure how long Russell Wilson will hold onto the Giants QB1 role.

The New York Giants already established Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback for the 2025 season. However, before the Kansas City Chiefs decide to start preparing to face him in Week 3, it turns out they might be the first franchise to face Jaxson Dart at the professional level instead.

The Chiefs are scheduled to visit the Giants for the season's third game, which would be the home opener for New York. But Wilson might have a

Wilson is the starting QB for the Giants right now, but Newsday's Tom Rock says that the presence of Dart makes that commitment quite tenuous. "If the Giants come out of (training) camp believing Dart is ready to play, their tolerance for Wilson will be short," Rock wrote in a recent mailbag.

The Chiefs might baptize Jaxson Dart into the NFL in Week 3.

"Even Eli Manning only got a two-week leash the last time the Giants were itching to play a first-round pick at the position (Daniel Jones in 2019), so if things go very south very quickly this time, Wilson may not make it to the home opener in Week 3."

Such a choice might not be a bad idea after all, given Wilson's miserable history against the Chiefs. Steve Spagnuolo has to be licking his chops knowing Wilson is on the team's schedule in the first place. The Chiefs have 25 sacks and 5 interceptions against Wilson in their last five contests. Wilson is also a miserable 2-5 overall against the Chiefs in his career.

Wilson's last win against the Chiefs came as the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback in a decisive 24-9 victory at Mile High back in Week 8 of the 2023 season. But that game featured a stifling Broncos defense doing a number on Patrick Mahomes and company, and was far less about any heroics from Wilson. (Andy Reid's red zone play-calling was also an issue in that game, but that's not important here.)

As for Dart, he's looking better and better each day in Giants' camp. His first day left Giants fans a bit panicked, but reports have been stronger after a week. But will the team really turn to Dart after only a couple of games? Rock seems to think so.

The truth is that giving Spags the chance to feast on a rookie quarterback making his first start against the league's most successful team of the last few years is just as welcome an option as facing Wilson. Either way, the Giants are going to be the underdogs at home, and the Chiefs should expect to enjoy a little East Coast swing.
