The Kansas City Chiefs have some serious work to do at wide receiver this offseason, but they're off to a good start late on the first day of the free-agency tampering period. Tyquan Thornton is coming back to Kansas City on a new two-year deal that will have his usage rates in the crosshairs, hoping for a much higher target share going forward.

NFL reporter Mike Garafolo broke the news of Thornton's deal with the Chiefs, a two-year contract worth up to $14 million that rewards him for a job well done last season.

The Chiefs have a long history of betting on long shots at the wide receiver position, but they rarely work out the way Thornton did. The former second-round "bust" of the New England Patriots (2022) was released after three inconsistent seasons, and Kansas City claimed and quietly stashed him for the duration. Who could have guessed he would have become one of the most important weapons for the Chiefs' offense in 2025?

The Chiefs have kicked off the overhaul at wide receiver with a bang, as Tyquan Thornton has decided to return to K.C. on a two-year deal.

Thornton's elite speed, exhibited by an eye-popping 4.28-second time in the 40-yard dash, was always his calling card, as one of the NFL's fastest receivers. The Chiefs found a way to unlock that early when dealing with an injury to Xavier Worthy and a suspension for Rashee Rice. Thornton hauled in 3 touchdowns in the first 5 games and became a trusted target for Patrick Mahomes early in the season.

Somehow, Thornton's early season chemistry with Mahomes was lost in the shuffle as players returned. Thornton was shoved back down the depth chart and played sparingly for the rest of the season, and despite excellent results in what little reps he earned, Thornton finished the year with only 19 catches for 438 yards and those same 3 touchdowns.

Thornton has been open about his hopes for even more offensive responsibilities in '26, and the fear among Chiefs fans was that the receiver might be insinuating that he wants to play elsewhere. Those concerns have been alleviated with the signing, and the assumption should be that Thornton will play a much bigger role going forward.

Fortunately for Thornton, the way has been cleared in free agency, since Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster are already departed. Rashee Rice is coming into a contract year and could be gone in 2027 as well. That leaves Thornton and Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals as the only wideouts on the roster for the long haul.
