It came down to the final play of the game, but the Kansas City Chiefs are 2-0 after knocking off the Colts in overtime to conclude Sunday's slate of games. The Chiefs might have been the betting favorites to win the AFC West entering the season, but let's be real, there were plenty of question marks surrounding them, and for good reason.
After two games and two wins, however, the Chiefs have proven that they're back where they belong, which is as a clear favorite to win the division. It might still be early in the season, but things are going about as well as they could for the Chiefs in the AFC West so far.
Chiefs have an early AFC West advantage after just two weeks
While the Raiders are also 2-0, they're probably not going to be a long-term threat to the Chiefs this season. They're very much in rebuild mode, and their victories so far are against the Dolphins (another rebuilding team) and the Chargers, who we'll get to in a moment. If the Chiefs can beat the Raiders in Week 4, that'll tip the scales even more in their favor.
The Broncos fell to Kansas City in Week 1 but rebounded in Week 2, beating the Jaguars in Denver. They're 1-1 now, but the Chiefs have that head-to-head advantage, which is always a good thing to have. Plus, the Broncos' schedule is no easy feat. Denver has a home game against the Rams next week, then plays the 49ers on the road, plays the Chargers in Los Angeles, and then hosts the Seahawks. Woof.
Now, let's talk about the Chargers. Ohhhh, the Chargers. Once again, there was hype all throughout the offseason about how this Chargers team was going to be the real deal. It was Year 3 of Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles, Justin Herbert had his star offensive tackles back, and Mike McDaniel was joining the coaching staff as the offensive coordinator. It was all coming together for the Bolts!
Except it's not... at least not two games in. The Chargers are 0-2, losing to the Cardinals and Raiders, two teams that were not expected to be any good this year. Not only are the Chargers losing, but they're losing in embarrassing ways. They fumbled the ball six times on Sunday and just looked... bad. This is not what anyone expected to see from the Chargers in Year 3 of the Harbaugh experiment.
To make matters worse for the L.A., they're entering the brutal part of their schedule. Up next is a trip to Buffalo to face the red-hot Bills, followed by a trip to face the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks. They'll host the Broncos after that and then come to Kansas City. The Chiefs will have a chance to bury the Chargers by that point.
The NFL regular season is a marathon, not a sprint, but it's always better to be 2-0 than to be 0-2. The Chiefs are exactly where they're supposed to be through two games, and that's never a bad thing.
