Chiefs cornerback question sparks risky Tyrique Stevenson idea

The Chiefs need help in the secondary but is this the way to go?

It's no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs need secondary help this offseason. They traded Trent McDuffie to the Rams and lost Jaylen Watson (also to the Rams) in free agency, leaving massive holes for Brett Veach to fill between now and the start of the 2026 regular season.

Moe Moton of Bleacher Report thinks he has a solution to the Chiefs' secondary woes. He proposed that Kansas City trade for cornerback Tyrique Stevenson of the Bears to fill their need at cornerback.

"Stevenson is entering the final year of his rookie deal. So, the Bears could consider trading the talented cover man if they don't plan to sign him to an extension before he hits free agency in 2027. After allowing nine touchdowns in his rookie campaign, Stevenson made strides in some areas of coverage, giving up five scores and a passer rating below 88 over the last two terms."

Bleacher Report suggests Chiefs should trade for Tyrique Stevenson

Sure, on the one hand, this looks like a trade that could make sense. But there's a pretty big catch when it comes to a potential trade for Stevenson. Moton touched on that risk.

"However, Stevenson is still susceptible to big plays. In 2025, he allowed a staggering 15.3 yards per catch. While the Chiefs should be alarmed by that number, respected defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo could help the young 25-year-old cornerback iron out the wrinkles in his game."

While I see where Moton is going with this trade proposal, Stevenson's tendency to give up big plays is something that would give me pause if I were Veach. Yes, Steve Spagnuolo is a great defensive coordinator but wouldn't it be a better idea to just draft a cornerback with a first or second-round pick and let Spags teach up a rookie instead rather than give up any sort of draft capital?

The Chiefs made a difficult decision to trade McDuffie and not re-sign Watson and it's going to put them in a tough spot now. Stevenson's PFF numbers weren't too shabby a season ago but the big plays he allowed is a reason to steer clear of this trade.
