The Chicago Bears are mourning the loss of their owner on Friday with the news that Virginia McCaskey has passed away at the age of 102.
McCaskey, born on January 5, 1923, was the daughter of George Halas, the founder of the Chicago Bears.
After her father died in 1983, McCaskey became the principal owner of the Bears, making her one of the few female owners in all of professional sports. Under her leadership, the team secured a victory in Super Bowl XX following the 1985 season (the "Super Bowl Shuffle" season).
The Hunt family knew McCaskey well as an immediate family member of one of the league's original owners. As Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt detailed in a statement, "My mother, Norma Hunt, adored Virginia. They were friends for decades, sharing their love of football and supporting each other through many ups and downs."
Hunt went on to honor McCaskey for her professional contributions to the game of football and also for her personal traits as well.
"Virginia McCaskey was an icon of professional football and the matriarch of a wonderful family. She will be remembered not only for her impact on our game, but also for her joyful demeanor, her steady leadership, and her deep faith in the Lord.
"Virginia's influence on pro football spanned nearly a century, and she will be deeply missed by the entire football community. The Hunt Family and the Chiefs organization extend heartfelt condolences to the McCaskey Family and the Chicago Bears on the loss of this remarkable woman."
