Chiefs avoided a total nightmare scenario, but the job's not finished

Still alive...

The Kansas City Chiefs were trailing 20-9 entering the fourth quarter against the Indianapolis Colts and their season was certainly on the brink. It looked even bleaker for the Chiefs to still be afloat in the playoff race when Kareem Hunt fumbled and lost the ball early in the fourth quarter but somehow, someway, the Chiefs managed to get themselves back into the ball game.

The defense came up clutch, not allowing the Colts offense to do much of anything in the final quarter of action. The offense, while not electrifying by any means, scored 11 points to tie the game and force things into overtime. From there, the Chiefs went on a 12-play, 81-yard drive that chewed up nearly six minutes of clock and went on to kick the game-winning field goal in overtime.

It was something we hadn't seen from this team so far in 2025. They finally found a way to win a one-score game and while the defending AFC champions are still facing an uphill battle to get into the playoffs, they're in a better spot than if they had lost this game.

Chiefs finally capitalized when it mattered the most

While this win was certainly refreshing, the Chiefs are a long way from being out of the doghouse this season. At 6-5, they're still on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff picture, sitting behind the Chargers, Bills, Jaguars, Steelers, and Texans in the wild card race. Sure, they could still win the AFC West but the chances of that happening are slim, especially with the loss to Denver a week ago.

The good news for the Chiefs is that everything they want to accomplish is right in front of them. They have six games remaining and those games will come against the Broncos, Chargers, Cowboys, Raiders, Texans, and Titans. Two of those teams are in the playoff picture, at least as of this writing.

K.C. cannot afford another loss and that's why pulling out this tight victory was much-needed. Hopefully, this win sparked something in the Chiefs that we've yet to see this year and they can end the season on a massive winning streak to get into the playoffs because, as Chiefs fans know, all you have to do is get in the dance. From there, anything can happen.
