The L.A. Chargers were supposed to be standing in the way of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2026. After K.C. won only six games a year ago, the Chargers (and Denver Broncos) were expected to vie for divisional supremacy while the Chiefs figured out how to retool and perhaps rebuild, depending on the effectiveness of their initial response to a total collapse of a season. Five weeks in, all such predictions have fallen flat.
These days, Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is answering questions about job security. Justin Herbert is losing his sheen in quarterback rankings. Head coach Jim Harbaugh is trying to figure out to pull out of an 0-5 tailspin, with a road trip to Arrowhead next on the to-do list. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are 4-0 and coming off a week of rest before starting into the heart of the schedule.
Is this a potential trap game for K.C.? Can the Chargers find some momentum in a rivalry game to right the ship? The Chiefs have supremacy to sustain as the lone unbeaten team in the AFC. The Chargers are trying to keep it all from falling apart. There's a lot to consider as we get into Week 6.

Biggest Chiefs storylines heading into Week 6
Who will step up at wide receiver?
The Chiefs are without Tyquan Thornton for perhaps the entirety of the regular season. They're also without Rashee Rice, who was declared out on Friday after missing practice all week. That leaves an already middling WR room without their two most effective weapons in the passing game. Cyrus Allen was a preseason sensation. Jalen Royals has been waiting in the wings, too. The Chiefs might promote Justin Watson. Someone has to step up for the Chiefs as a trusted target while the team waits for Rice to heal.
Can the Chiefs' pass rush finally get home?
The Chiefs have gotten some consistent pressure on the pocket in the first month of the season but somehow that's rarely translated into actual sacks. The Chiefs have gone three games without a single sack, even as they keep beating opponents. With both starting tackles out for the Chargers (and more), the Chiefs should be able to get home against Justin Herbert in Week 6.
Can Travis tie Tony?
Travis Kelce and Tony Gonzalez are perhaps the two greatest tight ends to ever play the game and they both suited up for the Chiefs within a generation. But the former has a chance to break the latter's record with 88 more receiving yards. Gonzalez holds the current tight end for most receiving yards ever—regular season and postseason—with 15,413. Kelce sits right behind him at 15,326. With a banner day, Kelce could grab another career mark on his way to Canton.
