The Kansas City Chiefs appear to have turned the page from the brief Carson Wentz backup experiment, as they signed Gardner Minshew to sit behind Patrick Mahomes in 2025. With there not being a spot for Wentz in Kansas City, he'll be in search of his next NFL home, which will be his sixth team in as many years.
One spot that makes almost too much sense for it not to happen is in Cleveland with the Browns. Cleveland's quarterback situation is a disaster, as Deshaun Watson's setback with his injury will lead to him missing this upcoming season (and let's be real, even when he did play, he wasn't good).
With Russell Wilson signing with the Giants on Tuesday night, the Browns will need to keep searching for a quarterback for the 2025 season unless they truly want Kenny Pickett to be the guy this year. Wentz is someone they've reportedly had interest in, according to Cleveland.com's Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot.
Carson Wentz to Browns might be inching closer to becoming reality
Wentz, the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, looked to be the next big thing at quarterback. He was on track to be the league MVP in 2017 before an injury sidelined him for the rest of the regular season and all of the playoffs, including the Eagles' eventual Super Bowl win over the Patriots.
Wentz's Eagles tenure ended in 2021 when he was traded to the Colts and from there, he's been a one-year wonder for every team he's been with. He floundered with Washington in 2022 and by 2023, he was out of the league until he signed with the Rams as a backup later in the season. He officially embraced that role when he joined the Chiefs in 2024 to back up Mahomes.
With all of that said, if the Browns signed Wentz, that'd be a good sign that they'd probably be leaning toward taking a quarterback with the second pick in the draft because Wentz isn't starting material these days. He'd then compete with Pickett for the backup job if that's where he ended up.
Wentz was brought to Kansas City to do one thing and that was to sit behind Mahomes and step in if need be. When K.C. benched the majority of its starters in the Week 18 finale, Wentz had a chance to start and there was a lot to be desired from his play, even if he didn't have much talent surrounding him.
That being said, if the Browns have been eyeing Wentz as an option, it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see him end up in Cleveland.
