Brandon Aiyuk leaves Chiefs-49ers game after taking monster hit in first half
By Matt Conner
The San Francisco 49ers are hosting the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 and both sides came into the Super Bowl rematch with a long list of key injuries on the offensive side of the ball. Those lists have only grown longer in the first half of their game on Sunday afternoon.
For the 49ers, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is the latest player to require medical attention after being sandwiched between two Chiefs defenders following an impressive catch late in the second quarter as the Niners were scrambling to put together some points before the close of the first half.
Aiyuk went down after being hit by Trent McDuffie from behind and Chamarri Conner from the front while grabbing a 15-yard pass from Brock Purdy to get into the red zone. You can see the play below:
Both teams are hurting with significant injuries at the wide receiver position.
Aiyuk has been taken back to the locker room for further tests.
Beyond Aiyuk's injury, the Niners came into Sunday's game with the surprising news that Deebo Samuel was ill and working to feel good enough to play. The Niners are also down running back Christian McCaffrey for the week as well as Jauan Jennings.
The Chiefs came into Week 7 down their top two wide receivers after both Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown suffered season-ending injuries. Then on Sunday, the Chiefs watched JuJu Smith-Schuster leave the game with a hamstring injury that had flared up in practice earlier in the week. (He'd come into the game designated as "questionable" on the team's injury report.)
Aiyuk came into this season hoping for a new contract and held out for a considerable amount of time this preseason in the hopes of getting something done. That missed time of preparation has been blamed for his lack of productivity so far in 2024, although he's started to look better as time has gone on.
Through the first six games of the season, Aiyuk had 23 catches for 351 receiving yards and had yet to score his first touchdown of the year.
