Now that he's longer busy with the demands of being an NFL head coach, Bill Belichick is starting to spend his time like some of the rest of us: grading NFL trades shortly after they happen.
As a talking head for the media on various shows, Belichick has a lot to say after decades spent as the most successful NFL head coach ever. It's silly that no single team hired him this offseason, but it's nice that he's still very much paying attention to the game and allowing fans to hear from him with the sort of openness and candor that he couldn't exhibit as the New England Patriots head coach.
Most recently, Belichick appeared on the Pat McAfee Show on ESPN and provided some key insight for the latest pre-deadline trade from the Kansas City Chiefs.
Bill Belichick was all thumbs up for the Chiefs side of the Joshua Uche deal.
Earlier this week, the Chiefs flipped a 2026 sixth-round selection to the New England Patriots in exchange for pass rusher Joshua Uche. That move came five days after the Chiefs made an official deal with the Tennessee Titans for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to bolster the offensive side of things.
The deal for Uche was timely for the Chiefs because they're still missing Charles Omenihu from the mix of players up front in Steve Spagnuolo's defense, but now Mike Danna has joined the list of ailing players as well. Down a couple of primary options, the Chiefs made the move for Uche to keep inexperienced guys like Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Cam Thomas from having to play roles they're not ready for.
If that draft pick sounds off—in 2026 instead of 2025—you're not mistaken and even Belichick himself stated that he thought the Chiefs got a good deal. “(The Chiefs) didn’t give up anything in my mind,” Belichick said.
As for what they are getting? Well, it's disproportional to what they gave up, again per Belichick.
"Look, Josh Uche’s a really good rusher. He hasn’t had a chance to rush much this year for the Patriots because they’ve been behind a lot. The situation hasn’t been good. He had a big year two years ago. Now, he had Judon on the other side of him so it was two good pass rushers. But he’ll have a lot of opportunities to rush in Kansas City. I think that he’ll really help them.
"He’s got surprising power for his size. He’s got excellent quickness and a good get-off, and he has some flexibility in coverage. So I think it’s a good addition for a team that needs another pass rusher, which everybody does. Josh can do that. He’ll definitely help them."
Uche, who has 2 sacks so far this season for the Patriots, will have his first chance to show Chiefs Kingdom what he can do when the Chiefs visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their latest primetime meeting on Monday Night Football.
