Arik Armstead feels like perfect Chiefs fit but there’s one problem

It's likely not meant to be.

The Kansas City Chiefs could use help on their defensive line, especially now that Cameron Jordan won't be an option for them. Arik Armstead could be an intriguing name for Kansas City if he ended up being a cut candidate by his current team.

Alex Kay of Bleacher Report listed Armstead as a potential cut candidate that teams should home in on and the Chiefs would certainly be in that mix. Armstead offers the kind of versatility that teams dream of defensively and his experience at both left defensive end and right defensive end would be greatly appreciated in Kansas City.

Even though Armstead would be a dream come true of an addition for Kansas City, Chiefs fans probably shouldn't hold their breath on him even being available. Carlos Sanchez of Black & Teal, FanSided's Jaguars site, said that it's doubtful Jacksonville parts ways with the star defensive lineman.

"Releasing Arik Armstead would free up nearly $14 million in space. The Jaguars could use those savings to extend wide receiver Parker Washington or tight end Brenton Strange. That said, cutting ties with Armstead would also come with a catch. He was (and still is) Jacksonville's best interior pass rusher last year, and it's hard to see the Jags trading him, as they would have nobody else to pick up the slack.
"It's also worth noting that Jaguars insider Mia O'Brien reported early in the offseason that the Jags wanted to keep Armstead around in 2026. Sure, plans change all the time, but there are currently no signs that Jacksonville wants to shop the veteran defensive lineman."

Arik Armstead would be a dream addition to Chiefs DL but it's not meant to be

Dreams dashed, just like that.

If Armstead were a possibility, it'd give K.C. a lot more depth defensively and it's fun imagining what kind of schemes Steve Spagnuolo could cook up with him at his disposal. The Chiefs attempted to add help defensively this offseason, especially on the d-line, spending two of their top three draft picks at that spot.

If the season started today, the depth chart likely has George Karlaftis and Felix Anudike-Uzomah as the two starters at end, which isn't ideal. Karlaftis is talented but FAU has largely been viewed as a massive bust and having him as a starter isn't exactly making Chiefs fans jump for joy. Armstead would help a lot if he was truly an option.

Even if the Jaguars did part ways with Armstead, the long-time pass-rusher could probably find a better situation elsewhere and the only true thing drawing him to K.C. would be for a chance to compete for a Super Bowl. Even that's up in the air a bit considering how last year went.

It's disappointing but, more than likely, Kansas City is stuck with the guys on the roster and won't be able to bring in a high-impact player like Arik Armstead. What a shame.
