The Kansas City Chiefs' season has come to an end. There will be a lot of question marks surrounding the franchise this offseason but one of the biggest will be about Patrick Mahomes and his health.
Mahomes was injured in the final minutes of the Week 15 loss to the Chargers, tearing his ACL and therefore missing the final three games of the Chiefs' nightmare season. Andy Reid spoke to the media on Monday and provided an update on Mahomes and what to expect moving forward.
"First of all, he's doing great, for just being three weeks out or so... He'll go ahead and most likely stay [in Kansas City] for the majority of the time. Rehabbing [with] Julie. She's the person that does all that RPT and so he has a lot of trust in her and he's been just in there grinding. I mean, that's what I can tell you. And I think they'll just continue till we get started again. Not that he won't take a break here or there, but right now he's in that early process where you gotta really hit it hard... It's not necessarily a fun thing to do every day, but the is important thing is that you show up... and that you keep coming back for more and and he's been doing that."
The hope is that Mahomes can return in time for the beginning of the 2026 regular season, which would likely kick off on Thursday, September 10 with the rest of the games kicking off a few days later. The key thing will be not to rush Mahomes back so that the 2026 Chiefs have the best possible chance at getting back to Super Bowl level.
We saw where this team was at without Mahomes in the lineup and clearly, he's the glue that holds them together. Most fans probably already knew that but if there was any doubt, it came to light in the three games where Mahomes was not the one taking the snaps and throwing the football. The Chiefs need him if they want to rebound next season.
