Andy Reid retirement prediction isn't what Chiefs fans want to hear

What more does he have to prove?

There isn't much that Andy Reid hasn't accomplished during his decorated NFL head coaching career. In 27 years as a coach (14 with the Philadelphia Eagles and 13 with the Kansas City Chiefs), Reid has three Super Bowl victories, six Super Bowl appearances, and the fourth-most regular season wins of any head coach in NFL history.

What more is there for the man to accomplish? That's what some might ask, as Reid continues to get older. At 68 years old, Reid is the oldest head coach in the league by six years (the next oldest are Todd Bowles, Jim Harbaugh, and Sean Payton, who are all 62).

NFL insider Jason La Canfora wrote up some bold predictions for the 2026 NFL season and one of them won't be something Chiefs fans want to hear, well at least part of it. La Canfora predicted that "Andy Reid retires after another Chiefs Super Bowl". The Super Bowl part, especially a win, would be great but Reid riding off into the retirement sunset would not.

"You hear these rumblings every few years, but I’m starting to pick up on them again recently about Reid thinking he's running out of gas. And for all the people who have told me at this point that Big Red will keep coaching until he shatters every record there is, the people who whispered that maybe 2026 is it have a pretty damn good track record on such hunches.
"Of course, who knows if they will win the Super Bowl. But if they do, man, you just wonder if after all he’s been through, it might be time to call it a career. His health has been a concern at times. Some of their key pieces are nearing the end. The allure of being with Patrick Mahomes as long as possible has to be quite strong, but, then again, nothing lasts forever."

NFL insider boldly predicts that Andy Reid will retire following 2026 season

Look, the fact of the matter is that Reid is nearly 70 years old and has had health issues. He's also won three Super Bowls and, after the disaster that was the 2025 season, no one would blame him if he was ready to call it a career and start his Hall of Fame enshrinement countdown.

Chiefs fans know that Reid won't coach forever. He's already cemented himself as the greatest head coach in franchise history and it'll take a lot for another person to come in and dethrone him from that top spot.

It's scary for Chiefs fans to think about a potential Reid retirement though. Who would come in and be tasked with filling his shoes? Would they go for the biggest name on the head coaching cycle that year, hire someone in-house (Eric Bieniemy, perhaps?), or even try to pry someone away from another team (Sean McVay, anyone?)?

The question remains though - When will Reid officially call it a career? There have been plenty of rumors swirling about this, especially after Reid got the first Super Bowl win of his career, something that he hadn't been able to check off his accomplishments list prior to that. He'd have been a Hall of Fame coach even without a Lombardi Trophy but that win in Super Bowl 54 made it official. Then, for good measure, he had to add two more to his résumé.

There's nothing left for Reid to check off the list. He has 23 wins to go if he wants to pass Bill Belichick on the all-time regular season wins list and that'd take a few years for him to collect enough wins. He's already turned the Chiefs from a pretender into a contender, found them their franchise quarterback, and done something fans never thought could be done. What more is there for Big Red to check off the bucket list?

Whenever he does decide he's ready to be done coaching, Chiefs fans will wish him well. He'll have earned that retirement, that's for sure.
