With the 2026 NFL Draft on the horizon, there are a lot of questions surrounding the Kansas City Chiefs right now about how they'll handle their selections after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and posting a losing record for the first time since 2012.

The draft will obviously play a part in how Kansas City bounces back next season, especially after a fair amount of key contributors found new homes in free agency. And let's certainly not forget that Trent McDuffie was traded away.

That said, though, it's certainly no secret that the most important aspect of this entire offseason is how Patrick Mahomes progresses in his rehab as he works his way back after suffering a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee this past December during a Week 15 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers, which just happened to be the loss that officially knocked the Chiefs out of playoff contention.

Training camp is still three months away, but Mahomes' status is obviously still a major talking point, and head coach Andy Reid has offered up a minor but encouraging update on the two-time NFL MVP, telling the world that his quarterback is "doing great" at this point in time.

Andy Reid says Patrick Mahomes is "doing great" with his rehab

Reid met with the media on Monday morning, and while he naturally spent much of his time discussing the draft, he had this to say on Mahomes' progress thus far:

"He goes to meetings. He can lift, do all of that rehab, Reid said. "That's the phase he's in right now, so we'll just see, kinda play it by ear, see where he's at. He's doing great, but we just gotta be smart with this thing."

That really shouldn't come as a surprise, as Mahomes' goal from the start has clearly been to be ready before Week 1 rolls around this September, which is why he opted to undergo surgery the day after the injury occurred. And he began his rehab process just two days after that. An injury of this magnitude typically takes at least nine months to heal, so it'll certainly be close.

Mahomes himself was happy with how he was progressing when he spoke to the media a few months back, but he did admit that he initially wanted to put on a knee brace and finish that game with the Bolts, which thankfully didn't happen.

Again, this was just a minor update from Reid, but Chiefs fans will undoubtedly be encouraged that Mahomes is seemingly on track with the process. Reid wouldn't offer up a specific timetable, hence the "we gotta be smart with this thing" comment, but all signs seem to be pointing in the right direction.
