For all of the uncertainty swirling around the Kansas City Chiefs roster heading toward NFL free agency and the first-year player draft—from Travis Kelce's playing future to Rashee Rice's legal saga to numerous players who could soon cash checks from other teams—nothing matters more to the team than the status of Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes' success is synonymous with the Chiefs' success, which is why everyone is watching and waiting for any potential updates on the star quarterback's health.
For the sake of review, Mahomes suffered a season-ending knee injury in the final minutes of a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL and underwent surgery almost immediately after he was diagnosed, the first steps in a long offseason recovery process that will have fans nervous for his status for Week 1 and beyond.
Chiefs Kingdom will be pleased to hear the latest Patrick Mahomes' update from Andy Reid.
Fortunately Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had at least some positive remarks when asked about Mahomes' progress on Friday. Reid spoke with reporters ahead of the 2026 NFL Combine since he explained he wasn't going to be in Indianapolis to answer questions like normal.
When asked about Mahomes, Reid didn't have any specific updates on a timeline, but he made it clear that the Chiefs' franchise face is doing everything he can to get back to full strength as soon as possible.
"He’s around here all of the time, spends a ton of time here, seven hours a day," said Reid. "He’s in there cranking away, making progress every day. It’s great to see he and Julie, the trainer, she grinds on him and makes sure that he stays on task and challenges him and everything else, and he keeps showing up.
"That’s about half the battle on these things, when you have these injuries, that you show up, and it’s not going to be a pleasant thing every day. You’ve gotta fight through it. You’ve gotta attack the challenge of the workout and rehab, so he’s doing a great job with that," Reid continued.
For all of the concerns confronting general manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs this offseason, Mahomes' availability, or lack of it, will be the biggest of all. While there are no guarantees that Mahomes will be ready to stand under center when K.C. takes the field when it matters most, he's doing everything he can to control things on his endl.
